Photo Webster engines, where are they all?

Hi everyone,

I'm curious how many Webster engines are out there, both inverted and horizontal. To my knowledge there is no list of existing engines so I thought this thread might be a good start! I would like to gather serial numbers, rough locations (ie state or province), type of ignition, and pictures if possible.

The attached photo's show Webster Improved Inverted sn 3812 located in BC Canada, it has spark plug ignition and is owned by myself and my father.

Great stuff Brian!

Hopefully we can get some info on the horizontal models as well.
It seems to me a fellow in North Dakota? mentioned a few years back that he found the remains of one in a scrap yard. I will have to go back in the archives and find that post...

Here's hoping a few more Webster owners will jump in!!

Best check with nar, seems to me there's a couple roaming around there.
And I expect Kenny Wolf still has a few.

There's at least one in Canada, I'd say it's an overgrown 4hp horizontal.
I've been calling it a "pre-improved" as it runs backwards and was built for a wipe spark ignition which Dad returned it to.

Serial # is 1534 if my memory is holding up.

J

**Also should probably check in with the owners of Thompson & Lewis engines as the horizontal Websters tended to follow that pattern**

Some what funny as we just got done machining 3 sets of flywheels for the Inverted Webster Engines.

I have restored 4 of them and working on 3 more at this time. Also have helped several others get their's back to running condition. Have a couple of patterns and core box's for the 3 HP Inverted Webster's.

I may have some information from working on Websters and if anyone is interested contact me or I could start a thread on what I may or may not know on them.

Enclosing a couple of pictures of the machined flywheels and some of my Son running the big lath turning the center for the crankshaft fitting. - Ted m

Wow, looks like you are a Webster guru. I had a Webster for many years but sold it about three years ago when I started downsizing my collection. I bought it from Paul Cox in Kentucky back in about 1991. He told me it was on a printing press in New York. It was a hot tube with no igniter. I got it running on propane with an Impco carburetor. It had the pulley cast with the flywheel. If I can find my pictures I will post a few and add the serial number. I sold it to a man in central Texas.

Here's a 3hp inverted. This belongs to our county fair assoc. I've been working on this as time permits to bring it back to running condition.

Fred: Do you by any chance have the serial number off of this Jr. engine?? Most of the smaller Webster's that I have seen are the later type and have an Ignightor. This one dose not. - Ted

I'll add a current picture of mine # 1791. Wish I could say I got more done on it in the last couple years.

Sorry but I do not..It is in a collection in Peru Indiana. Kenny has several inverted engines. I believe I seen 3 Webster inverted and a couple other brands including a Master Workman 2 cylinder?? It was hard to tell what was there because everything is jam packed together..

Dwayne: By chance did you sell it to a gent named Butch?? I know he bought one down that way. Helped him with the original carb and fuel pump. Don't know if he ever got them on though.
Guru-- Don't think so but some experience as from working on them? I may be able to help and maybe not but will try.

This is why I like Harry's Page as one cannot only learn but sometime's help others with there restoration problems. It seams like one can learn a lot. I for instance learned that some of the Jr. Webster were not Ignightor type (which I thought were all Ignightor type). Also on MFaris Webster has different flywheels, crank, gov. weights and latch out collar. This I have never seen on other Webster's One thinks they know something and then from this form he learns something new.

Mfaris - I think it is great that you are starting a serial number list on Webster's The one # 2857 is here in Nebraska and I know of another in south central Nebraska.
These are the number's on mine
1496 - V crank (Restored)
2584 - Hot tube (working on)
4278 - Hot tube (working on)
4649 - Ignightor Hot tube (restored)
5735 - Ignightor - Hot tube (working on)
6791 - Original running and rare front Ignightor type single set of gears.
These along with 2857 are all in Nebraska.
I also sent one to Australia but can't find the serial number. I have the number some place and will post it if and when I find it. - Ted

Yes, Ted. I sold my engine to Butch. He has done a wonderful job of making it a show piece. Thanks for helping him with the parts. I will keep hunting the serial number so we can add it go the list. There was a Webster factory winch engine in Austin, TX, but it left for parts unknown. Also a small Webster in Ft. Worth that belongs to a man in Kansas.
