Denis, good question about the production numbers. They are indeed misleading. The "25,000 engines produced" in the 1888 advertisement refer to the total number of four stroke cycle engines produced under Ottos patent that were licensed to Gasmotorenfabrik -Deutz. This included the the sum total by Schleicher, Deutz, Crossley and several others. Schleicher was one of the smaller companies, only producing just over 3000 units in the 13 years spanning 1877 to 1890. - Wayne

After viewing adverts in old magazines and engine ads in brochures etc, there was a lot of smoke blowing and not all of it came from factory smoke stacks. Many manufacturers used bragging rights to high numbers of what they produced thinking it would influence buyers.

Gene, So true & a lot of the blowing smoke came from Otto, Diesel & the people & companies affiliated with them to such an extent that history is more of a story book than anything true. Even Clerk & other respected writers at the time bias their work & make a lot of errors; it all makes the hobby more interesting though.

A page that just touches a subject on Otto is at; https://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=141852 (& tons more can be added)

Mike & Scott, that was an unreal find; a great engine & a great story! Thanks for posting & sharing the pics & videos.

Rik, Welcome to Smokstak! As with Lenoir, I too look forward to more. Maybe a little about your 1/4 HP GFD or the interesting testing you are currently doing on the historic engines at Deutz - Wayne

Found this while looking for a hot air engine article. Looks like your engine; this is from the Oct 12, 1889 issue of Scientific American.

That's AWESOME Brent. Same engine from what we "believe" to be the same year. And with that being said We can see what the greasers and the oiler look like. So now we will be on the lookout for 3 matching grease cups for the mains and the conn rod and a right angle oiler for the gears. Thanks again for putting this up. Mike

When John S. Plaskett died in 1941 the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada had a writer named C.A. Chant write an article on his time at the University of Toronto.

On February 14, 1890 there was a massive fire at the University. "At that time the Department of Physics was on the ground floor of the west portion of the Main Building, and the workshop was in the basement. An 'Otto' gas-engine served as source of power, but the equipment was meagre."

The fire was caused by oil lamps in the hallways because the gas lights were too sparse and dim for a large social event being held that evening.

By my math if the engine was installed and running in February of 1890, it got there no later than 1889. Since the Crossley pendulum governor was patented in 1887 and there were at least 327 engines made with that governor by Schleicher Schumm before ours (2883 is the inverted @ Warp and is fitted with the same governor, as are 2886 and 2907 at Coolspring, all of which I believe to be 1888 engines) that would narrow the age of our engine to at best very late 1888 and at worst late 1889.

In my opinion 3255 Could be early 1890, but no later.

J

My good friend Rik Lemmens ( From The Netherlands) has forwarded some pictures of the 1/4 HP Deutz mentioned in yesterdays post. He was also kind enough to supply some catalog and advertising information as well. Although somewhat different than Mikes engine, the similarities in the German and American designs are quite obvious.

Rik states that the small Deutz engine was built in 1885 and may very well be the one of the oldest original hot tube engines in existence.

Thank you Rik for sharing this with us
