Default (6) 400 HP Snow Engines - (4 ) running - video - 1989

This is a video that I though should be posted. It was taken in 1989 by Woody Sins ( New Hartford, NY ) during an unannounced visit by us to Heath pumping Station in PA. Back then this station was used 24/7. The video shows (4) of the (6) 400 HP Snow engines in operation pumping natural gas under full load. The engines are still at the facility but not run any more. It was a great moment to capture these machines on tape, especially running as it was designed to do almost 80 years prior with out modern improvements. They still used low tension ignition and ignitors !!!- As built 4 of the engines were set up as low pressure compressors and two as high pressure or ( second stage compression). It is my understanding they were installed between 1911 and 1915. Shortly the Coolspring Power museum will have a 600 HP version of these amazing machines erected and running.

Worth Watching !!!

Thanks Wayne-impressive to see them in motion-can't help but notice how clean the engine room is. A person could eat off that floor for sure!

Thanks Wayne; That brings back memories from the time I went with the gang from Coolspring up to Heath Station in 1990s. The operator started one of the engines by baring it to just past TDC of one cylinder and opening the air and it started right up and ran it for a while. I specially remember going out and listening the sound of exhaust, each pipe had a different note. Down the basement was a stockpile of spare parts. All in all, it was a memorable time. I wonder if it is possible to do that again. Probably not as those engines have not run in a while and other concerns.

Kaili, I am not sure what actually happened. My guess is that there was a leak of natural gas in the building and it ignited. I have not been to the building since but it is my understanding that many of the windows and part of one wall was blown out. I know that a couple of "Stackers" have been there since. Maybe they can shed some light or post some photos on this this. - Wayne
