Chris, thanks for posting the picture. All is clear now......thought I was going mad !!! I was not aware one of these existed let alone survived, very nice engine.

It would be great if anyone could confirm where these engines are ? Keven suggests Austria - maybe one of the European collectors could confirm?

OK ,Upon the suggestion from several people on this thread and other discussions, I have decided to put together a simple web page showing all of the Otto-Langen engines that I know about. Included are the German, English and Italian renditions with many photos and a brief description of available information for each. Please keep in mind this a work in progress and I am sure there may be a few mistakes or omissions.

As you go through this you will notice a few incomplete entries. If any of you would like to share the needed information or have the missing photos I will gladly update the site. Thank you Keven, Wayne Timms an others for the great discussion so far. Enjoy !

For all of you that have been following this thread: Here is an update, I was finally able to see the engine. Attached is a video of it in action. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe this to be the oldest running internal combustion engine - 141 years old. This was a very rare treat to see in person - as the engine is in a private corporate setting and not open to the public. Permission was granted from the Deutz Engine Works to post this video. See the Youtube description for further details ENJOY !

What would Herr Otto say if he knew that his first engine was still in running condition?

Thanks for the video Wayne! Incredible!

Thanks for sharing that Wayne.

It is very true to say that's in nothing short of a miracle to survive.

It is also nice to see a large corparation do not forget there roots and have this museum ,even though it is not open to the public.

I thought it would be worth while posting that video. It amazes me that the engine survived WW II. Having seen some of the aerial photos of the Cologne area after the bombing runs, there was absolutely nothing standing.

The engine is the center piece of a show room for the company. Very impressive and is obvious they are proud of it. Right beside the Sn #1 Otto Langen is Otto's very first experimental test mule 4 cycle engine, and along side that is the earliest known production 4 cycle (slide valve ) in running condition.

This attached photo is of the experimental 4 cycle engine as it sits today.

This is also in the Deutz "trophy room". According to them it is the oldest surviving production 4 cycle engine anywhere. Serial Number 3589. It was built in 1878 rated at 2 HP. 140 mm x 280 mm bore / stroke. One of the unusual characteristics that stands out with this example is the scotch yoke slide valve drive. As can be seen it is 100 complete and run on "special occasions" - Wayne

Another one that was in the vaults. I heard years ago, such a gizmo existed but always thought it strange that they would go through all of the effort for 4 HP. ( especially when their single cylinder product line included engines much larger) Possibly two cylinders were used for very constant speed regulation - dynamo service?? This engine has spur & bevel gears, single sideshaft, vertical governor ( unusual for Deutz) and variable cutoff speed control. Anyone out there know why they did this for such a small HP? It is basically (2) 2 HP slide valve engines morphed together. What an amazing machine ! - Wayne
