Once in a while, drastic measures are in order. I would guess, being knowledgeable as he is, Bill was liberal in the use of an airhose to blow the grindings away. Plus, there wouldn't have been many anyway. Point surfaces are pretty small!

well just thought i'd throw an update up. I worked with the green clinton for about 3 days. first 2 days i couldnt get it to run, i got more hours on the pull rope and starter cup then the engine running under it's own power. 3'rd day i replaced a known good condencer with a new one and that time it fired but still runs eratic. I double checked, set, and cleaned the points. Still runs eractic. I changed the coil with a new one. Still runs eratic. I checked the carb and it's still clean. Still runs eratic. No carb adjustment changes it. checked the valves ect. still runs eratic. I've done everything there is to do and it still runs eratic. My black clinton runs exactly the same way only it's not as contrary on starting. I give up. Atleast they idle ok. It's not like i work them. I just drained them of gas and put'em back down stairs. Maybee one day i'll swap the tillotson carbs for some Carter carbs and see what that does.

well i would say that if it is a mechanical govner it may be worn out and it is time to replace. that is what i always learned when it doesnt work on a briggs.

Just a thought here, but when mounting the flywheel to the crankshaft with the key in place, is there any play here, is the key in like new condition, is the flywheel key slot or crankshaft key slot elongated. If you get all of the tolerances in the wrong direction the timing is off by just enough that many weird circumstances arise.

The keys and key ways are fine. It has a magnetic hub that mounts on before the flywheel and it's only purpose is to correctly time the magnets. The flywheel is just a dead weight so it wouldnt matter for that even if the key was broke but all the same everythings fine. It runs like if you ground the plug out every other second then let it run again but there is nothing wrong with the plug and nothing wrong with the valves as it seems like the intake valve floats but it dont. I'll just let it be an idler. Runs good on idle and thats it. These 2 clintons i have run exactly the same way. They sure dont run like i remember them. they use to hit and "tie every bundle"

Ok let me get this straight, you have a magnetic hub on the crank, the coil armature legs surround the magnetic hub? And the coil is held on with clips? If its black, about 1.25" in diameter and maybe 2" long, Id say its a Bendix-Scintilla ignition. We ran those on our outboards for years, My continental has that coil, and they are still available. The old coils tended to get cracks and can short internally, especially as voltage potential goes up ( higher RPM). Coils are about $30.00 and a condenser is about $4.00

Ok if this is what your coil looks like, it should work.
Search for Mercury ( as in Mercury Outboards ) p/n 399-125 for the coil and 399-123 for the condenser.

guess i got had on the coil deal. I paid 60 bucks for it. Sadly thats one of the things i tryed and it did not change. even a condencer didnt change it. Even though i will say it made it easyer starting. Your right on the ignition system i got by the way. I tell ya this thing will throw ya for a loop. Just out of curiosity i'd like to see someone else try and make this thing run the way it should cuz i sure cant.

Hmmmm maybe we can rule ignition out if its happening on 2 engines. If it was me at my shop this is what I would do:
1-Verify the cam timing ( degree wheel and indicator )
2-Verify the ignition timing ( buzz box and degree wheel )
3-Bolt the engine down solidly to a heavy base to minimize vibration (fuel foaming)
4-Verify consistent ignition while running (scope)
5-Check for intake leaks or exhaust back pressure ( or lack thereof )

What do you have the engine bolted to? Sometimes depending on carb design you can get float bounce or fuel foaming from vibration.

lol

It's mounted on a skid but they dont vibrate at all at idle. Only when you give'em gas but my black one never did that and i didnt mount it to nothing before i uh...rebuilt it. I still say i shouldnt have touched it. It was a perfectly good original. Now the green one, it's just a stubborn old cuss but they both run exactly the same. Idle real good. Give'em gas....nuthin doin.
