John, thats a good idea on making the list, I was thinking it would be neat If we had a sort of registry on some of the other Briggs models as well. Maybe with pics? It would be a task for sure, but it could be helpfull in the restoration of these engines, especially ones that may be missing parts, or are bought in a dissasembled state. What do you guys think, and how can we make this list? I would love to help! Sean.

We would be more then happy to post a list on our web site. I was thinking of doing a list on a few engines, but would be happy to do the letter series and models 5, 5S, 6, and 6S.

Here's my B&S "Y", serial number 150380. The picture was in 1953 and I was 10 years old. (Turned 62 this summer) I still have the engine but the motor bike, a Servicycle from the 40's is long gone. Should've kept it!

The Briggs Registry is now on our site. When you want an engine added, please leave the serial number and the whole Model letters.

Default Re: Briggs Model Y Serial No.

well, i have a Y model i restored last year.

Type No. 60161
Serial No. 28749
5 digit engine

and if i read my books correct that would make it a August of 1933 engine.
if your doing 6's i can get numbers off of mine aswell. i do know that it is a 1952 model, i just forgot the serial numbers, it's a cast iron 6's.

may i add that this would be an exelent way to see how many of a certain model are still out there....but it is half impossible becouse not every one has computers. ohwell.

if ya'll decide to do the rest of the models i have a few here to name off aswell. hope this thred continues and perhaps grows.....this could become intresting.

Hey guys,
Was cruising ebay tonight and saw something interesting. Although they don't seem to be related in any wayand are in seperate auctions, there is a shroud with the SN 171297 and a whole engine with SN 171370. That's only 73 apart! Closest yet! Hopefully can take advantage and own them both.

Back a few years ago I had a Model Y with serial number 350. Yes, 350. I sold it to a collector at Coolsprings. It ran very well and had a really odd can style muffler on it. I also had a slant fin FH that had s# 8961 on it. -Brian

Here's one to think about. How many different TYPE NUMBERS are there on model Y engines?? Model Y's are very common, no doubt they were the 6S or 92900 series of thier day!

It's interesting to look at the applications they were used on. they saw service on Power Chargers, lawnmowers, air compressors, washing machines, just about anything you could think of.

What are some of the special characteristics of each type? For example, type #60083 was used exclusively on Sears "Kenmore washing machines.

Okay fellas! take it from there!

Ok, here are the serial #'s off of mine. I figure these would be some nice projects for my son when he wanted to start on something.
55592, 68243, 78155, 81652, 84004, 103045, 117019, 121312, 165853, 186289, 203505, 226260, 253680, 264867, 310286. Hmmm, things you find when you start to look around the garage. Good thing they don't take up much room.

Say, another thing to think about with the type numbers would be the different starting styles. The various kickstart options and the hand start lever and the cast iron rope cup. I do have a question. When did they change the head design from the squared off head fins to the chamfered fin style? I know the older "Y" engines had the squared style fins. Also, how many different decals were used over the years? The serial 68243 has different style letters in the decal. They don't have rounded edges on the letters. Instead they are sharp edged, for a lack of a better way of putting it.

Hi Folks,
Scored a nice original model Y yesterday afternoon. I cleaned the points off and blew the cobwebs out and it runs. It has clear legible decals and the serial number is 138130. Type #60190.
