Default McCormick-Deering 6hp M Valve Guides

Hello. I found out that the 6hp M has valve guides. How do these work. I mean how are they removed/installed? The engine that I just picked up has the part around the intake valve all busted up. Is this part of the valve guide? Any and all information will be greatly appreciated. THANKS
