Default Won't start - 17.5HP Briggs and Stratton

Another dumb question: I have a 17.5 HP Briggs and Stratton on a 6 year old Troy Built rider mower. Every other week, it won't start. I replace the battery (thinking it's a bad one). The mower will start that week, but after a week of storage, the engine turns just a little, but won't start. I've taken the battery back twice and it does the same thing. I store it with the key off and the seat up so the contacts are not hitting. I've changed the spark plug, fuel filter and oil recently. Any ideas why and what I can do? Thanks

Try, when you stop the engine, unplugging the anti-dieseling solenoid on the bottom of the carb. If the battery is not run down after a week, SOMEONE has messed up the wiring on your mower or installed the WRONG ignition switch. Have you tried charging the battery instead of returning the battery?

If its an unregulated charging system there is a diode on the pigtail harness coming off the engine. Unplug the connector at the engine and let it sit. If its OK the diode is bad and voltage is back feeding to your stator.
