Discs:

Found rear of cylinder has a good size chunk broken out. Might have thrown a rod at one point. Also found the piston upside down in cylinder, potentially from installation after the repair. Not good for getting oil to the piston wrist pin!

Originally, I had some doubts that 8850 could be the serial number for my R&V as I wasn't sure if they were making hopper cooled engines that early. Then found these photos I took at the 2003 R&V reunion of an 8 HP R&V engine with detachable hopper. I believe there was a GEM article on this R&V that was found in the woods and restored to present condition. It's serial number is E 8763. So this engine would seem to confirm that they were making hopper cooled engines that early and my R&V would have been made 87 engines after this one!

So now I need to find or make a new brass tag for the R&V. It had a four screw 4" square brass tag mounted to the cylinder plate. I believe it was similar to the tag in the picture below, where the last part about location was different depending on the Deere Implement Co. the engine was shipped to. As this engine came from Georgia, I'm assuming it would have been the Deere Implement Company in Atlanta, Georgia.

Does anyone have an extra tag like this laying around that I could buy?
Does anyone have a tag like this that I could borrow to have copied?
Who out there can reproduce a tag like this?

Appreciate any help!!!

Wow Jeff she is coming along Beautifully!! I wish I could find one like that in the wild. Will you have it a butterfield this year? Dad and I are thinking we are going to ride our bikes down on fri or sat this year. Looking forward to seeing your other engines and meeting you. I believe you already know my dad as he said I should meet you. Happy holidays. Jay

Jeff, this is what the tag for the 6 HP Electric Lighting R&V Sideshaft looked like. I assume all of them had JD Plow Company on them.

I have used a needle scaler to dimple cast iron, and then let it rust and wire wheel. Do this a few times, and the repair should almost be undetectable.
Thoughts?
Don

Exclamation Re: Root and Vandervoort 12 HP Portable Engine Restoration

The breakout in the cylinder probably was caused by a broken or dropped (read cap came off) con rod. You might be able to find a section of cast iron plumbing waste pipe, close to the diameter needed. Cut a section to match the break and weld or braze in, and machine. A good gas welder should be able to fill in the break, but it will take a bit of heating to get it right.
Nice work, keep us posted!
Andrew

Tommy, I saw a 6hp tank cooled at Portland several years ago with a Deere & Webber tag on it. However, I believe John Deere Plow Co. shows up on most R&V engines. That would be the correct designation for an engine sold through the Atlanta branch house.

I may have been wrong on the tag. The screw holes are 3 5/8" apart across and 3 1/2" apart front to back. So instead of the square R&V tag, it was probably like the one Tommy posted.

If you go to the following link, you can see all the variations of R&V tags. There was John Deere Plow Co., Deere & Weber, Deere Implement Co., etc. The middle tag 4 rows down appears to be a repro tag that would work on my engine. Does anyone know where I can get one?

http://www.oldengine.org/members/plo...gines/tags.htm

Jay, this R&V engine is currently in Virginia. Not sure if it will make it to Butterfield, MN. However, we have 2 other nice R&V engines there, so you should still come!

Don, we used a needle scaler on the wheels/cart some already. They look good enough for now, but you are right, we could let them rust outside awhile to blend them better.

Andrew, we could get cylinder fixed, but don't think it is necessary. We can come back to it later if needed.

-all new nuts/bolts as the as originals were pitted
-resurfaced governer tower and replaced adjustments
-replaced lubricating chain for the bearings
-machined surface of pulley for water pump

-connecting rod cleaned and waiting for piston to get fitted with new rings
-etc, etc!
