I also just noticed that it DOES NOT even have the right carb. on it. It should have the 'twist bowl" style on it. Maybe I can sell the buyer the right carb. for $1000.

NOTE!!! The payment method was modified in the last minutes:
We are coming to a close on this unbelievable Waterloo and Dropaid would like to thank everyone who has stopped by, made comments and of course bid. Going into the final day we are adding this note as a reminder to the future final bidder. To whoever is the winning bidder, we would like to remind you to please, PLEASE do not just pay for this engine by Paypal up front. Whether it is going freight or being picked up, we need to talk to you BEFORE payment is sent. Because of the dollar amount this is falling into, we could accept a 5% deposit by Paypal immediately and then the balance to be paid within 7 days by some type of certified funding. Again, please contact us before any payment is sent - thank you and good luck to all in the last day of this auction! |

Fmeclipse, I am in need of the original style twist bowl carb for a 1914 2hp waterloo boy. But I can't afford $1000 for one. If you have a spare one, how much would you be willing to sell it for? Also I do think it is outrageous what engines and parts are going for on ebay. I won't be able to stay in this hobby if the prices at the swap meets reflect ebay prices.

If it really is getting real bids and stuff, that guy is laughing all the way to the bank! The maytag, he said before that it was pratically new old stock, i think he did the overhaul in a can, painted it and called it good as new, if it was origional, their would be some sign of decals on it.

Also a new old stock maytag should not have a video of it running!
For the waterloo boy, for that price, i would find a nicer rarer engine, a sideshaft or something, the person selling it probibly has a friend bidding on it so that he can get alot of money out of it, some people are such JERKS, and if thats not the case, then the people that are bidding on it are STUPID, or very rich, who knows, it might be Jay Leno on the lead |

Chris, I don't think the ultra-rich are usually that stupid.
You can bet if Leno was wanting to lay down some big bucks on a nice waterloo, he'd consult an expert who would tell him everything wrong with this one and why he could get a better example for less money. Of course with Leno, ORIGINALITY would trump price every time, and why would he bid on this? Kevin |

Gee guys...maybe all of us who have an engine or two are now going to increase our home personal property insurance. I am new to this hobby but recently bought an old Carlisle and Finch engine ALONG with a generator/dynamo and I guess you guys refer to this as "barn fresh?" . I would ask this question independently of this link but just don't know how to make a new post. Anyhow- can I run this generator/motor combination using an old Lionel train transformer since it says in the original catalogue that it is also a 1/6th H.P. motor. Thanks for any help or advice. PS. I'll learn to post!

The seller changed the PayPal terms to avoid paying the PayPal fees or if the so called winner was not happy he could file a complaint but the seller would only be on the hook for the $500. I wonder if my round Waterloo gas tank is worth a few bucks.

I think its a setup! I was watching the Maytag auction. That engine was far from new or original but the seller said it was. The high bidder is going to be burned bad on that one too.

My family sold my Grandfather's 3 or 4 HP Waterloo at a live estate sale a number of years ago in Minnesota, maybe fall of 2000. It sold for $3700. We were shocked, but happy and so was the new owner. The engine had an older restoration and we don't believe there was anything special about the engine.
Based on 8 years of inflation and increased market value, maybe $5000 would be about right for this one on ebay? Maybe there was a shill bidder, but I just wanted to point out that anything is possible when you get two bidders who really want something. -Jeff Wahl |

I agree with Jeff, If two guys at a sale want the same thing, anything can happen.Around three years ago, there was a sale here, where a barn fresh 6 HP John Deere E with a blown head gasket sold for $10,000.

Rudy and Jeff make good points, but the general concensus seems to be that this waterloo has brought much more than the current "going rate"- if indeed it actually sold.
I've often thought someone should do a master's thesis on auction fever. As the guys said, it only takes two bidders to make a war, and the factors involved can be varied, ranging from a hostile rivalry- either two genuinely interested parties, or one guy just "running the other up" out of spite; to multiple family members with sentimental attachment to a particular engine; to a couple guys who just plain don't know what something is "worth"; to people traveling long distances and being willing to give too much so as not to "waste a trip". We all have left auctions wondering what in the world the high bidders were thinking, but on the other hand, sometimes the next auction will make us think we should have bought them all the first time around.
