Well we are back from Panama after 5 weeks of doing something I am not good at--------goofing off !!! Did ,however, find time to write an article for the June/July Engineers and Engines Magazine and if I had been home ,I am sure I would not have found the time!!! Also worked on some stripping ideas for the 6 h.p..
You will know that I had too much time on my hands ,I started counting parts (some folks count cards, I counted castings) Turns out that I got 69 original casting when I purchased this little Russell, 15 of which where deemed unusable .I was missing 25 castings ,smallest being a clutch shoe turn buckle and the front smoke box and compensating gear being the largest!!!
Sure was hard seeing the snow back in the State on TV. Was even harder explaining it to folks that had never seen any. They just can not believe we could survive such an awful event. I know it was sure hard for me sitting on the porch in my shorts!!!----------------------------TWD

When I did the 1/2 scale of the 10HP Russell I made 76 patterns and only a few of them were cast more than once - just wheel hubs and clutch shoes were duplicated; everything else was 1-off.

The only one that was a real bear was the main engine casting because it contained FIVE cores. The foundry I used had never done a mould that complex and they wanted me to come in and put the mould together, which took over 6 hours! Then the lift truck operator backed into the mould overnight and I had to go back and do it all again the next day!

One of these days I will get all the pictures scanned and put 'the building of the Russell' up on the Net.

I just LOVE watching the video of your pretty little 6HP - I could watch it for HOURS!

Well I have been cleaning up and downsizing my shop.My goal is to have more floor space for my toys and maybe someday be able to walk around them. Under the heading "To Late Now"! I found an original casting for my 6hp Russell back behind my threading lathe. Looks like the one I made but sure would have saved some time had I found it 3 or 4 years ago. Wonder how many more are hiding in my shop? So that makes 70 original castings. Maybe I can find a few more and start on one more little Russell !!! -----------------------TWD

Tom,

I don't think you would have any troubles finding stakers or other steam folks who would be more then willing to generously 'adopt' some of the items cluttering your shop, myself included!

Before the phone starts to ring off the hook, I do not plan to get rid of anything steam or other goodies. Just items I no longer need or things that I wonder why I still am tripping over them , years after they where replaced . After all might need to find room for another 6 !!!-------------------------TWD

Hi Tom,

I am going to try to take my father to a show or two this summer. I would like to know what shows you, your bride and the 6hp will be attending this summer? We are considering NTA if I can get away from work for a few days.

Thank you,

Jeff Smith

My Dad (Tom) asked me to post this for him....

"When Ana and I got home from NTA we found a nice letter from Steve Hinebeck of London,Ky. with two photos of our little 6 hp Russell traction engine ,taken by Steve in the 1970's of our little Russell in Lyman Knapps "bone Pile". I think it was a good thing I never saw these two photos till after the completion of this restoration. They may have even scared me into not doing this project!!!!!!
A big thank you to Steve for helping fill in some more of our engines history.---------------------TWD"

HalfKeck; Was great to meet you and thanks for taking our photo after we dried out from our car wash. Was a great honor and surprise to bring home such a prestigious award . Having met and visited John on his farm, once , in the early 70's it made receiving the "John F. Limmer Memorial Trophy" all that more special and we will keep it safe and dry!!!!
Received a very special letter and photos of our 6 hp Russell ,when we got home from NTA. Please check back as my son is working on it for dear old Dad!!!!!-----------------------------------TWD

P.S> Looks like my son work this computor thing alot faster than Dad does!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks son!!!!!

I only met Tom recently, but he is a great steam engineer, machinist, and restorer.

At the same time he is humble. I told him his 6HP Russel is 99% there on the phone and he only said 90%. He also said that the award was a surprise to him.

Shouldn't have been a suprise Tom, YOU earned it!!!!

Tom & Ann! It was a pleasure to have your Russell on my saw mill. I always have time for the smaller big engines and it gives them a nice load. You are to be commended for the work that the two of you have done to bring such a nice engine back. It was a pleasure to meet the two of you. Butch.
