Thanks to help from Mike Waggoner and Paul Bruns the old engine is on a set of wheels for the first time in God knows how many decades. Iíve spent a little time painting small parts. After I got it mounted on the trucks, I measured the flywheels and am thinking I will have to move the cart wheels out to make the flywheels clear when mounting them. Anyone have any experience that can tell me other wise?

Thanks,
Mike

Well, I was able to finagle the flywheels around and not have to pull the cart wheels out when installing. I tried to install the pulley side flywheel first, and hit a snag. The crankshaft is extended out past the flywheel, but a smaller diameter. The flywheel is just NOT wanting to start on that side. I took a set of calipers to make sure the flywheel should fit on the crank, and it should. I for sure don’t want another broken old style flywheel! Due to some help from friends (thanks John and Harry!) I have been able to make a deal on another pulley side, 4-bolt hub flywheel. I think with a little machine work it can be made to work for the governor side. Now just got to make the trip to pick it up!

I had cleaned up/painted a newer governor side flywheel to install on the engine until I get an older style flywheel ready to go. It was a totally different experience to install, as it just slipped right on after I spread the hub out. I noticed that this newer flywheel has a relief cut into the hub on the side that goes into the shaft first, so I think I will take the pulley side flywheel down and try to cut a relief in it. I will also slick up the shaft with some emery paper before attempting to install again.

One step at a time, I’m getting closer to a running 1905 6 HP IHC portable!

Had some good help out there the last couple of days on the engine. May not look like it, but have been working like a madman the last few days. Got the flywheels on and cinched down, got the mixer on, igniter on, latch out mounted, and after adjustments aplenty to the head and valves and valve springs boy howdy does this old girl have some compression!!!

Still a few small projects to do on it over the next few days, but if all goes as planned we will be taking it over to my buddy Edgarís to try for the first cranking this weekend!

Itís alive!!!!! Thanks to Edgar Powell for helping me work thru some igniter and exhaust valve problems, we were able to start the old girl and keep it running for awhile today. If we didnít have the aforementioned problems, the old girl WOULD have started from the first turn thru compression-as it were it DID fire the first time thru....first time I have EVER had that happen for me! Iím beyond thrilled! Hereís hoping I can get enough stuff sorted out to take it to Adams TN next month!

All : tonight!
