Default New find - Fairbanks Morse 6 horsepower Z

Open crankcase, looks to be ignitor fired.

Missing the head and ignitor that I can see so far. Not worried about a mag as a battery and buzzcoil are easy to set up with an ignitor (so I've heard/read).

Any ideas where to start looking for a head and ignitor? Possible cost/fair price to pay?

I know where to find rings and gaskets, what about main and rod bearings?

Not sure if we are going to fix this one up right away or save it for spare parts for the other 6 hp Fairbanks we have...

Oh, and I know there's someone here that just loves to hear them called Fairbanks Morris, so I'll put that in here too.

Looks like someone startes slicking it up with the light blue body putty. If they'd gone to that much trouble, they had intent to finsih it so I'm guessing the rest of it might be somewhere close unless I'm seeing the photos wrong. You should be able to find a head and the other parts by some searching around. Might take 6 months to find but, keep looking and make a good runner out of it. We all love runners, that's what our hobby is about.

With an ignitor you need a regular coil of sorts, generally the primary side of an automotive coil works well. Look back in the older posts, there is a lot of discussion on the subject.

I would be willing to bet that with all the parts you require you could buy a running 6 HP Z for less then it will cost you for the parts. Just my 2 cents

Mike,

I might just have some parts buried somewhere in my "collection" that has built up in the storage shed. AND, I might just find some friendly Stakkers that aren't trying to retire on parts sales, too!

And if I was concerned about the cost of getting it running (or getting ANY engine running for that matter) I wouldn't be involved in this HOBBY.

To the rest of the responders thus far:
Thank you for the heads-ups and ideas. If/when I decide to get it going I'll keep everyone updated. I'll ask the seller if he'll get me the serial number so I can get an idea of the year and parts required...

I am sorry that you found my imput usless, I just thought a different point of view could be helpful, I know of a lot of people that went head strong into a project and then said Geeze I wish someone had warned me. Then other people just want the challenge of making something from nothing. I was not trying to put down you or your engine god knows I have spent a lot of money on restorations myself. Again Just wanted to give another way to look at it

Sorry, Mike... after a long day at work I took it the wrong way. Never stopped to think that you were just pointing out that a person can get deep into a project and find out it isn't worth the $$ you have in it.

Trouble with typed messages... you just can't hear the tone of voice or see physical cues!

Again, I apologize...

We have a running 6 hp Z, but it's a spark plug model. A friend gave it to us to "get it out of the way." Talk about luck!

Serial number is 185268

Should all the 6 horsepower ignitor fired engines be pretty much the same? I was doing some reading and it looks like it could have been equipped with a plug oscillator magneto, or just an ignitor...

Is it possible to put a later spark plug head on it?

Anything is possible, but a few of the things you need to determine are:
Bolt pattern, and water passages, Same or different

mixer and exhaust rocker layout- quite different from your Z to a spark plug Z

Blanking plate for ignitor.

There may be other issues, these were first to mind.

Hey, I'm sending you a PM. I'm leaving tonight for southern california from salt lake city. I have an extra head for your engine, as well as a bunch of other parts. Give me a call if you want to hook up with me and I'll sell you whatever you need if for a very reasonable price. The head has a big repair on it and the valve guides/valves are pretty worn out. I have other stuff you may want also and I'm not out to retire on parts sales. I'll PM you with my number. You'll have to call today or tomorrow if you want to work something out though.

[QUOTE=DirtbikePilot;359600]Hey, I'm sending you a PM. [QUOTE]

Hi, I really appreciate the offer! I'm not ready to buy parts until I get a chance to look the engine over more thoroughly, though.

I'll be home in a couple of weeks to look it over, and if it looks like it's worth repairing I'd be willing to deal on the head and have it shipped.

Chris, thanks for the info!
