If you're looking to buy new you might want to check out the Earthquake line of air impacts from Harbor Freight. A friend of mine has one, like you he didn't want to pay big $$$ for something he may only use a half dozen times in a year. He got one on sale and so far has been very pleased. It doesn't compare with my ancient IR but for the money it's actually not that bad.

Otherwise hunt on Ebay/Craigslist/Pawn Shops for a used major brand.

I think, could be wrong, that your choice today is snap-on, or made in some asian country. That said I'd take Taiwan over chinese.

I have several pneumatic impacts in my tool box, don't think I've used them in a few years, friend that rents shop has the cordless Milwaukee, I find its easier to just grab one of those for my occasional use

Stay away from the cheaper 1/2" from HF. I bought one and it was crap. The "Earthquake" model mentioned above however got a good review from AVe of all people, and he gives virtually nothing a good review.
Doc
Looking back I see it applies to the compact head model. https://youtu.be/jqWypTAG4Hw

I got real lucky.About 12 years ago I bought a used snap on for 25 bucks. It gave some trouble back in march. All I ask of the snap on man was to let me know what I owed to have it rebuilt. instead,I got a brand new 1. I think it woulda cost about 625 or so!
I am very happy with it,but when the guy first sent word no parts could be had for my old 1,I was told about Earthquakes from a couple folks. I was going to buy 1 of them until they let me know my old snap on would be replaced.

I've used several DeWalts, nothing wrong with them. I intended to get a Dewalt, but ended up with a Ridgid to match the set I got for Christmas with a drill, impact driver, charger & 2 batteries. I caught the 1/2" impact on sale at HD...
