Default Herculies 3hp video and need some help

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar1SeGq4nu4

Just got it running last night, bought it at portland in bad shape missing a few parts but otherwise a nice peice of iron. I belive it ran eather a cement mixer or some kind of crusher as it has a gear on the power side.

Since I dont have a mag (borrowed it off my other 2.5 economy) Does anyone have a spare ignitor and mag for this?

Something that is bugging me about it and I am not sure if its right the gov side of the piston is tapered by the flyballs and the flyballs are making contact with the piston. Anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it ? You can hear it in the video sounds like a wristpin but its not

If you lengthen the governor pin or somehow reduce the distance that the detent needs to travel to engage the catch block, then the governor balls won't fly out so far and come into contact with the piston. You may also be able to mesh the gears differently and time the governor so it doesn't hit the piston. I had a 3hp Jaeger that had the same bevel on the piston, but I didn't have the problem you have.

Ive heard some people say you have to time the gov so it wont do that dont know if it works or not, I had trouble with my 3hp doing the samething, i put a long spring in the gov so it would hold the weights in farther but if its soft enough it wont make it run any faster.

Iron City,
Here is a link to Glenn Karch's Hercules Engine articles in GEM, there is a lot of good information to be found here, hope it helps.

This is one of a few H. P. sizes of Hercules engines with this problem. I have only seen one. and solved it by simply timeing the governor/flyball gear so that the flyballs were vertical when the piston is at bottom dead center. It works, and it was a little hard to find what all the noise and clatter was about while the engine was running. On most all Hercules engines I have ever seen there is no way that the skirt can hit the governor flyballs . Good luck in a good hobby,Joe Morris

My 2 1/2E Economy when running at it's fast setting the governor weights will strike the Cylinder. I only run it at the slow or mid setting so it has not been a problem for me. Merton

Could it be the wrong piston ? may be the original broke at some time and was replaced with the wrong one.

I have had 2 1/2, 2 3/4 and 5 HP Hercules and Economy engines where the governor weights were striking the back of the cylinder. You may time the governor as mentioned before, but what you really need to do is make a longer governor shaft and weld in the back side of the arm that runs against the governor shaft. The combination of a worn shaft and wear point on the piece that the pin pushes against causes the problem you are experiencing.

I would think that the gov weights are slinging to far out. Mabey if you replace the spring on the gov that will help.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Matthew. Just to clear up the spring comment. The spring will not limit the amount the weights fly out. Only at what speed they fly out. The governor weights will only fly out as far as the detent blade will allow them to plus a little extra for wear and tear on all of the pins and flex of the detent blade. Just grab the governor weights and pull them out until the detent makes contact with the push rod and you will see what I mean. The longer the governor pin is, the closer the detent is to the push rod. This limits the governor weight travel so they won't open up as far and hit the cylinder or the piston. You do want a soft spring if you are going to slow the engine down.

It did the same thing on our 2 1/2 H.P. Economy, it is a real simple fix, your flyball govornors are 180 off if they are hitting the piston, all you have to do is turn it the 180, and then it is fixed, the govornor is not timmed, so it does not change anything if you turn it the 180.

It did take us a little while of looking to see what the problem was, but atleast it was a very easy fix.
