Thanks, Ray

I think that would be hard to find. Some people here have done the legwork and traced out schamatics for AC reg's in other generators like NHM, NHD.... . I suspect they didn't vary too much ,yours maybe similar see thread ----> http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showth...t=99743&page=6 (arround post #113, pics @ 61, 53, .... ) I would check the IGBT ( power output transistor) on the heat sink, 1/4 inch thick Aluminum plate)

Alternatively Flight Systems sells good cheap replacement regulators.

Onan didn't publish that information. Sealed so no field repairs can be done.

I was looking to build my own design.. My control board works better and it is all SMD..the prices they charge are ...well you know

Good luck !!
Unless you have some electronics background (like a EE) it would be hard to come up with your own good design, (unless you copy it off the interenet.) Prototypes always have a bug or two. And the time you would spend testing and getting the bugs out.....it would only make sense if your time was worth " 2 cents per hour" or you were going to manufacter and sell ~1000 to 10,000+ units/yr. I have done the latter at several big companies.
Nothing magical about SMD, just smaller and cheaper to produce in large quantities. And more thermal problems in the engineering design stage.

For 1 or 2 unit quanties it's cheaper to repair or buy a new unit. Talk to Flight Systems they are a good group of techs. They are cheaper than Onan, and I think they have a better regulator. I've talked engineering with them, they are competant.

Alternatively you could buy an aftermarket feild exciter AC regulator. It takes 110 VAC and supplies field drive. I think Powertronics makes some??

Uncle Ray....Sounds like you will be able to do it.

In some previous models of Onan like the Emerald and early Marquis models, they had 2 circuit boards. One was the AC voltage regulator (no factory published schematics) and 2nd the control broard whose schematics were published, basically relay logic. For schematic see end of manual at ----> http://www.cumminsonan.com/www/pdf/m.../965-0531B.pdf.

I think in your model they combined both into one board and potted the whole thing. A pain to work on, but not impossable for you. The potting on my old regulator is clear and pulls apart without too much trouble.

A design feature you should think about is how you want the regulator to respond when a overload slows the engine. The Hz will drop. These Rv type Onan's with electronic regulators reduce the AC output voltage as Hz drop. This is for transformer and inductor load "jwL" impedence issues, to avoid higher currents and help reduce the load on the engine.

An issue on aftermarket regulators that I noticed is they have a stability adjustment pot to customize the reg for different gensets.

While you are at it, if you want to use the gen to power your house, a feature you may want to include is to not bond the "current carrying neutral" and the "safty ground" in the regulator. Gives you flexability in meeting NEC code. I am modifying my potted regulator to remove this internal bond for just this reason.

Best of luck, I think you can do it.
