Default onan 6.5 nh 3cr/16000j

Finally got this genset to mess with after been sitting in the garage for a while, the problem was when i removed the starter relay few years back, i did not mark the terminals. I connected the starter relay to the b+ along with the other 3 terminals that would fit, and connected the other side to the genny along with the choke heating element. connect the small terminal(b+) to one side and the switch(b-) on the other, when i pushed the start switch, only the fuel pump and the coil is energized and no crank, but when i jump between the two big terminals, it will start fine as long as i press the start switch at the same time and i let go and will run ok. It will crank if I hot wire the small terminal with the b+ but will not start, I checked the voltage on the small terminal b+ and the voltage collapse to 0vdc when I press the start switch. Maybe I miss wired this unit?

sounds like it. or one of your relays is backwards.. hard to say.. we need the full model and serial number and an email addressee and someone will send you a manual so you can see how its wired.

This should be in "Onan Generators", not in "Onan Craigslist" where genset for sale listing are posted.

Use this link to download the UN generator manual.
http://www.cumminsonan.com/www/pdf/manuals/900-0196.pdf

Your wiring diagram is on page 6-15.

Do you have the correct solenoid. The solenoid for this generator is not the same as the one commonly seen on Ford cars and trucks from the late sixties / early seventies.

Some of the Onans used a solenoid with an isolated coil. The two ends of the solenoid coil are connected to the two small terminals. +12 volts is continuously supplied to one of the small terminals and the start switch grounds the other small terminal.

Others used a solenoid that has one end of the coil internally connected to the large B+ terminal. The start switch grounds the small "S" terminal that is connected to the other end of the solenoid coil.

The Ford Solenoid has one end of the coil grounded to the mounting bracket and requires +12 volts to the "S" terminal To start. A few Onan models use this Type solenoid but not yours.
