Default antique water pump question, please help!!

First off let me say im not sure if this is the right place to post this if not I do apologize. second Ive been working on an old f.e. myers piston pump ive got it running my question is where do I hook up the intake for the water and the outtake also how tight do the springs around the rubber need to be? any help is appreciated. Thanks and God Bless-Thomas

I would think the first photo is the intake side (Bottom chambers) and should lead to your water supply and have a foot valve on the intake pipe to keep an unbroken supply of water in the chambers The upper chambers with the pressure domes would be your outlet side.
