Default Kohler Kohler K 161 T (1978) on Troy Built Tiller weak spark

I have 1978 Kohler K 161 T which I have replace points(set at .20 ), condenser, and coil with Oregon 33-363. Very weak spark. Will light neon tube but won't start engine or jump a gap on spark tester. How do I check magnets to make sure they are good?

I am not familiar with your engine but I can still throw some ideas at you. Is the coil adjustable? eg; can it be moved closer or further away from the magnets on the magneto? If it is adjust to being about 0.008" and see if it improves. Clean the points so that they are free of any contaminants, I use either methylated spirits or white spirits. If you hold a screw driver against your magnets and try to pull it away and there is resistance they are good. If it comes away easily they are weak. I have found it rare to find that these loose their strength very often but if they have they can be recharged.

A quick "Google" search of the Oregon coil shows that is for a Tecumseh engine. Does it have the same specs as Kohler? What condenser are you using, Kohler or Tecumseh? They may all have the same specs, but I don't know. New Kohler points often need to be cleaned before installing, they had a protective coating on them. You might want to try cleaning the points and installing a condenser that matches the Tecumseh coil.

Found the problem. Bad ground on condenser. Cleaned grease and crude from block and bolt and finally had great spark. Starts great. Thanks to all replies. Bill
