Photo Briggs FH slant fin rope start

Can anyone tell me the approx age of this engine? It was missing the tag & shroud when I got it and has a replacement on it now. It has the brass carb and is really a rope start not a modified kick start. I haven't seen many rope start FH's that were stock, are there many out there? Are they rare?

Thanks,
Jim

Date codes may be found cast on the inside rim of the flywheel. Also stamped into the laminated steel coil core.

As luck would have it i got one of these engines today and wondered what it was. It is complete except for the shroud. It is not stuck but will take some tlc to get it going. I am curious if they ran like a hit and miss with the atmospheric type intake valve, also the price for one. I dont sell, only collect but the only other small engine i have is a busy bee. Welcome ED!
The B&S is a throttle governed engine, NOT hit and miss. It runs at low speed, though, about 1600 to 1800 RPM max, It simply wont go faster, because of intake restrictions, and valve design)

Rope pulley start was less common on FH Briggs engines than kick start. Most of the FHs were used on washing machines were kick start was easier to use than a rope start.

Jeffery, you're a little late on the introduction of the pot metal carb on the FH. If I remember correctly the brass carb was discontinued sometime in 1927 with the introduction of the pot metal carb. I have 1927, 1928 and 1929 FHs with pot metal carbs.

i just got one of these engine from my uncle. it is also a rope start. i'm not all that familiar with fh's but all the ones i have seen have the brass carb, mounted on the base which also doubles as a gas tank... i think.

this one i got is wierd, it has a tillitson carb (made in good 'ol toledo), flat fins and no gas tank in the base. also it appearantly has some type of oil pump in the base, which runs off of a follower on the cam...maybe???

this engine was a little beat up when he got it and he made a replacement magplate out of steel for it, and was also going to adapt a modern flywheel and coils, because the original flywheel was cracked and warped. he also told me it came off of a washer and never had a governor on it. i'm not positive if im going with the modern flywheel and coils but i will if someone "knows" it'll work. i also need a cam/gear if anyone has an extra that'll work on here.

could someone help me out???

Does it have two rocker arms? If so, it is a Briggs FI. Here is our FI but is missing carb and gas tank.

mike,

it only has 1 rocker arm. i haven't been able to find anything in my big briggs book. the tag says: "fh" engine # 93626. i believe built Oct. 1929. this engine also only has 1 shroud. i'll try to take some pictures of it.
