Default Adapting a Maytag Mod 82 Pull Rope Start

The person that owns the Maytag Model 82 that I am restoring wanted an easy way to start the engine. Fortunately, this engine still had the flat belt pulley. It was decided that a rope pull could adapted using the pulley. Two flat round plates (1¼" larger in diameter than the diameter of the pulley) were made from scrap sheet metal. 3-¼" holes were drilled in each plates to corresponding to the position of the pulley spokes. A slanted slot (to attached the pull rope) was cut in the plate that was to install on the outer side of pulley. The pulley edges were machined to insure a flat parallel surface to mount the round plates. See attached picture.
Next, the two flat round plates were mounted on either side the pulley and held together with the 3 ¼" diameter bolts with the pulley being sandwiched between the two round flat plates. The bolts were positioned so that they would contact pulley spokes. See attached picture with the assembled pull rope pulley adapter mounted on the engine.

If you have the original flat belt pulley, wrapping a leather clothing belt around the pulley works fine, with out making something up.
