Photo Briggs model M rope start clutch

Hi, I picked this mid year 1931 Briggs model M engine up recently and havn't been able to find much out about it. I havn't been able to find a parts list for this engine yet. Missing gas tank/brackets, carb. broken and missing parts. My question is about the aluminum rope cup sprocket/clutch. Was this an original Briggs part? This is my first model M, I don't know alot about them but have not seen one with this set up. The front is broken on the rope cup but clutch works fine. It is threaded like the cast iron rope cup, right hand threads and also the aluminum part is threaded and screws on to the clutch. It has an oil cup in the center of the pulley. I hope the pictures came through ok. Any help identifying this would be greatly appreciated. My best guess is its a rope start with clutch drive for the chain sprocket? Thank you in advance for any light you can shed on this part. Den

I believe the Model L and Model M used the same starter mechanism. Similar to an FH with a chain attached to a lever (or possibly kick pedal) starter. The clutch would allow the chain sprocket to ratchet when the lever (pedal) was returned to its resting position.

John,
Thank you for your reply. I have a 5 FH's and a model L and they do have a similar clutch set up up but none with the aluminum rope pulley. I was just wondering if this was a different version of that idea and just missing the kicker or if it was used for something different because of the rope cup. Den

The engine probably had a kick pedal, the cup may have been added later in life.

A guy is parting out an M on ebay right now. You just missed the tank that was on today, but there's still a set of brackets and a cast rope starter cup and some other parts. Search for "Briggs Model M" and you should find them.

Trevor,
Hi. Thank you for the heads up, I have his items on watch. The tank was probley worth it but don't know how high it would have gone. I didn't bid on it. M parts are hard to find. I really need to find a parts list! Anyone have a copy of one for sale? Thank, Den

Andrew, Thanks for your reply. I believe the aluminum rope cup is original to the clutch. If you look close at the second picture I posted the two parts are threaded and were made to screw together. I just havn't seen another one to compare it to. The pictures could have been a little clearer, sorry about that. Den

I think I remember somewhere an electric start option for an M. That might be what you have. I had an electric start R and it was similiar but did not have the extra rope start on it - if the battery was dead there was no way to start the engine.

Dengine, is that kinda the same clutch mechanism for the chain drive electric start that briggs used in some later model engines from the 50s and 60s?

Thank you all for the replys and information. This is a great site! I will leave it on the engine and look for a kicker set up as well. Does anyone have the correct part number for the kick start pedal? I have one from a model L that looks like it will fit but havn't tried to put it on yet. Still looking for a parts list for the M.
