Default Need instructions to dismantle 8KWMDKD Onan Genset

My genset failed due to saltwater intrusion and I need to remove it from the diesel motor to assess and possibly replace. I was able to remove the bell housing at the rear but it is not apparent to me as how to proceed as nothing seems to be able to be removed and there are no bolts that are accessible. I have the parts diagram, what needs to be done to continue removing the generator stator etc. I am able to turn the generator but it does not come out.

I do not know your machine BUT you likely need to remove the rear cover of the gen. Then the stator and then the rotor.

Do you have the stator off and the center bolt out of the rotor.

I have only removed the end bell and cover on the rear of the genset. The rear bearing is still on the genset. Behind that is a large nut. I do not know the next step but my guess is that I remove the bearing and then the nut but I also thought that maybe I need to use a large gear puller and pull the entire rotor assembly out instead. I have a parts diagram but not a shop manual.

See if this helps you.

Need to slide off the bell end, then the stator (don't let rotor rub).

Remove bolts from the flex plate drive at the flywheel. Support rotor assembly. Do not let it hang from the flex plate, nor sit it upon the ground on its side. Stand rotor on end once removed.

Follow the instructions Eric posted and you will have no problems. No need to pull the bearing unless you need to change it. Lay something soft under the rotor to prevent it from dropping when you remove the drive plate bolts. Or support it with a lift.

How much resistance should I expect in pulling the rotor out or will it come out easily?

Sorry I was thinking the rotor slid out first. How do you pull the Stator out from the stator assembly? While mine is a rusted mess and I am sure it won't be easy, is there a tool for doing this or just get something through with a hook on it to pull it through?

The four bolts you removed to take the end off, hold the whole thing on to the SAE adaptor (aka engine bell housing or flywheel housing). You may need to soak the front joint where they connect with a little pentrating fluid, and tap carefully around the housing at the joint with a piece of 2x4 or leather mallet, if you think it is that stuck on. The stator assembly comes off as one piece, outer frame, windings and all.

That could be a problem, three of the four bolts were broken off by the mechanics at the marina when they tried to remove the the end bell. I was able to pry the bell off. I will try penetrating oil and try to loosen things with a mallet and wood as you mentioned. I appreciate your help. If I can get the generator off of the engine I might be able to salvage this thing as the engine has had light use but in a harsh environment so there's plenty of surface rust on this thing. I am not sure about whether the generator is savable. Aside from the rust inside there is evidence of burning or scorching on one of the fields.

I had not realized that the stator was all one unit. So far I am unable to pry it completely off. The bottom just won't budge. I can get a small gap on three quarters of the stator. I have been supporting the rotor while doing this but just can't get the stator to come off. Very rusty too. Is there something else to this?

Let it soak in some rust buster and try again.
