The bunkers I believe are a gloss or as much of a gloss as they could achieve in the 1900's a semi-gloss single stage paint (POR 15) would look great! NOW AS for the boiler thats a tricky one they were coated from the Case factory with Asphaltum or gilsonite ::case steam engine owners manual:: -basically roofing tar. Its a corrosion prevention form the factory in the early days. Its what I would use to be authentic in a restoration process and it would look nice and glossy for a while. Im sure most farmers back in the day with a new tractor painstakingly added a new coat every year then said screw it as the new wore off LOL LOL good luck and we better see pictures !!

I thought that the bunkers had a touch of green in the black paint?

There is an older thread on proper Case paint colors. It seemed to be slightly controversial especially when it came to the pinstripes... I do believe the bunkers where a slight green hue. Our Case roller reflects this although now they're just black. http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showth...ht=case+colors

A nice looking Case at the start of this thread...http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showth...neer+engineers

I'd be happy with a paint job any where near that good , feel bad about getting it all greasey and soot covered

I painted by boiler with rustoleum brush on grill paint and have been very happy with it. Painted the bunkers rustoleum gloss black and hand painted the pin stripes white and red. I Know that's not totally correct but it looks nice.

A high heat/temp flat black is good for the boiler. i imagine the bunkers were glossy or semi gloss. with a hint of green like a guy guys have mentioned here. not sure why they used that color but thats what the old timers that ran them new remember. we use 3 q black and add 1 q green. Also Lime or Steiger green for the striping and silver/white for the pinstripes.. no yellow! the 80 at the start of that other thread looks great

POR 15 makes an amazing high temp gloss black paint for the boiler. Now when i say high quality i mean literally the best in the biz!! And not too outrageously priced. Its is a true non pourus paint. That is if the asphaltum route seems too messy and high maintence. IMO coming form years of painting experience I believe a hundred year old machine deserves a higher quality paint job than rustoleum just sayin

when I've used "normal" POR15, i've had horrible luck if there was any oil residue anywhere, including where any metal had been sitting in oil for a while and any oil had permeated into the metal. The POR15 just did not stick no matter how much I tried to clean it (granted that was cast iron and not firebox steel).
is this going to be true for the high temp back paint that they make, or is it more oil tolerant?

Has anyone got a PPG paint code # or other than I can cross reference for paint for new bunkers for my Case. I have read the threads and see 3 parts black to one part green but there a lot of differences in blacks and greens as well. I am looking to get them powder coated and they will not give me a price till I provide a paint code.

Don't know if it helps for steam, but the Case Collectors Assn have some PPG Case colors listed.

PaintRef has reference to a Case black PPG 9519

I used Cummins Black Engine Paint on the boiler of the 75 hp. Case I used to own and it stood up Really good. No Complaints for the nearly 16 years I had it.

Something about the old timers, they told me that 3 parts of Derusto Industrial Green and 1 part black made Geiser Green. I never bothered with the black.

Hello everyone,

I painted the boilers of my Keck and 65 Case with the age old recipe of a gallon of boiled linseed oil and a pound of powdered graphite (corn planter plate lubricant you can get at most farm stores). I applied the paint with the boilers just slightly warm. A word of warning, be careful if you are standing on the barrel for some repair reason as the graphite does what it was designed to do..makes everything slippery.

Best wishes to all,

Gary Jones

How does the graphite do for keeping its color?
When the Linseed and Lampblack is new its a nice dark flat black. I usually clean it with Kerosene while cold and gear oil while hot- the heat thins the gear oil and it smokes off.

However, by the following spring it has weathered a bit and the flat black has become more of an ash grey at least until it gets rubbed with oil again.

Haven't noticed it being slippery at least, and I've stood on top of it more than a few times while cold and while unpleasantly warm.

Here’s an interesting ad for boiler paint. A tar based enamel...
