Default Geared vs Servo Shift

I have been asked by the boss man at work to replace a lathe that we have, I have found several and many dealers are trying to push used Servo Shift lathes on me, my question is do any of you have a prefrence, it appears people would rather have the gear shift VS servo shift. I am also trying to find a small Horizontal mill with outboard support, I have not looked at it yet but it maybe older than dirt Lucas 41 (from the WWII era) $4000 loaded does that seem high its a 5hp, we dont need a monster we are just touching up castings on pumps and cylinders. Thanks
