Default Old Buda Engine designations (IU,ITU,etc)

In going thru old catalogs I note a number of Buda engines with an additional "T"added:
CU, CTU
IU, ITU
XU, XTU and so on.
Some trucks use the plain version, some the "T" version, and some show with both.
Without having to laboriously sort thru listings, does anyone know, off the top of their head, what the additional "T" designated?? Any comments appreciated.

Bud

I will give this a wag: according to my book

First digit is the series of engine IE A,B,C,D and so on

second digit is application B=bus T= tractor or truck

third digit is always U must have something to do with the name BUDA maybe his second wifes name the one that got most of the company stock in the divorce (Uranus) it might not be spelled correctly but I bet he might have felt poorly in the end or wondered of she came from the same planet (really guessing on this one)

forth digit is I for Industrial locomotives

now I was doing allright with this theory until I came across YR or YRA

R= runs or they gave you the runaround to find parts? or another thought risk assessment

While digging for some Buda detail I came across and old Buda ad that gives a nice dimensional breakout of bore & strokes for some of the tractor models. -Joe B

Would anyone know the difference between the model "TU" and model "HTU" Budas? These were both 4 cylinder tractor (and truck) engines, circa late teens/early 20s. Bore and stroke appears to be 4.25 x 5.5 for both.
I am wondering if the HTU means a different clutch housing, perhaps with provision for electric start? Any ideas?
Thanks for any help,
RM

Third digit is the type of clutch/flywheel housing or type of oil pan etc... "U" means the engine's clutch/flywheel is enclosed.

Question Re: Old Buda Engine designations (IU,ITU,etc)

We at "Sukanen Museum" have a M-H #3 with a Buda HTU .
But the block is trash. Anyone willing to part with one ?
We want to restore this tractor. For the engineers, how many prefer threshing with a straight belt?

Hello Paul,

Is your Massey Harris a #2 with the Buda? my #2 has the Buda and my #3 has the Wisconsin engine.
What is your serial number? can you post us a photo of the tractor?
I also know of a #2 being restored in Belgium which requires a Buda motor block.

Malcolm.

When the weather warms up a bit more , will get a photo and post it.
The tags were sold by mistake to someone in Ontario, so no data, of course no names so it will be hard to buy them back;
maybe we will get lucky and he will see this site and contact me.

Malcolm.
Many thanks G Willikers for spotting my crazy mistake, the MH#3 is definately a Waukesha engine and not Wisconsin, somehow got my "W" mixed up here late at night during a senile moment.

Sorry for any confusion.

Malcolm.

G Willikers: Can you fill me in on the Wauk in the MH#3...that model falls into a hole in my stuff...
In a 30 catalog I have #2, a 12/22, with the HTU, and a 10-20 with no model number shown, using a Case motor (no Case ID or b/s shown) apparently made for MH...everything else I have (which is not much) jumps up into bigger numbers.
Just the tractor rating and the Wauk ID is all I need for my notes. Many thxx!! Bud

Mr. Tierney,
My records show one #3 that I have seen has a Waukesha DU - 10A with 4.5 bore and either 6.5 or 6.25 stroke? Does that make any sense - do you know the actual stroke? Tractor rating appears to be 15-25.
Also, any thoughts on variations of Buda TU and HTUs?
Take care,
G.

Say?
Can anyone tell me the date when the Buda Company was taken over by Allis-Chalmers?
Thanx,
G.

It has been confirmed it is a M-H #2. She is in tough shape but
with patience. A couple of snapshots.

My name is Kurt Muller and am a volunteer at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in upstate New York. I am currently restoring our M1917 WW1 tank. I had to take two of our Buda engines to make one work . I thought the original was an HU with basically two separate oil pans to go around the main axle . The second Buda is the same displacement but has a separate head and a standard oil pan. I could never find out what model it is. I need to find a head gasket for it and in looking on the site I was shocked to see that engine in your machine. Could you tell me the model number so I can try and get a head gasket for it ? Would appreciate any info you can provide. Kurt
