I remember as a kid back in 1968 looking at car ads in the local paper and I loved the look of the firebird. Listed was a bit under 3 grand as I recall. Man inflation sure jumps prices up over time.

That's why many of us didn't save those awesome rides of our youth, You could always get a newer one for a reasonable amount of cash. Todays mini van cost about the same as 10 muscle cars of the late 60s - 70s, and no one thinks of a mini van as a collectable ever! I was suffering the low horse power effects of the economy cars for decades until I got my F 250 with the 7.3 diesel! what a blast from the big block past! Life was fun again! But back to the subject again, the price of a new version of the garden tractor today will shock you! $2-$3K for a basic lawn tractor that is good for a few seasons. But a real bonifide Utility/garden TRACTOR will cost as much as a cheap SUV!

I got to admit that Wheel Horse is one cool looking tractor. I love the attachments too. Think I am going to start paying more attention to ads that have these old works of craftsmanship in the future.

No the new stuff does not compare to the old in workmanship or quality.

Hi uglyblue,

Our 1976/77 ?, Massey 1655 would have cost just under $ 4,000 when new for the base tractor with a 54" belly mower. Quite the coin in those days. Looks like the original owner paid even more as the machine came with a very heavy bottom plough as well as a super duty 16 disc harrow that must weigh over 300lbs, those were not cheap. Today; you'd have to dish-out about $ 24,000 CAD here in Newfoundland for the only modern tractor match (B series Kobota). Be too scared to price the attachments for the orange rig these days.

BTW, the 1655 still works like new, not pretty, and the Onan is weakening finally. But we love it.

Regarding prices of new machines, I happened across these tidbits yesterday. In 1948 a Baird Beaver GRT-3 tractor listed for $429, its plow was $37 and harrow for $37, but a sickle mower was $169. Also saw an ad for a Defiance Tractor Co (similar to a Baird) which sold for $395 in 1950.

One of the Gravelys (6.6 hp L w/ M106 mower) I bought in the last 6 months came with a whole bunch of paper work. This list was included, I'm guessing from the early 1950s. Eastern Mass dealer near Boston.

My 1968 WH Electro 12 sold to the tune of 945.90. Still have all the paperwork. That included a 48" rotary mower. The Electro was the top trim with hubcaps, a lighter, hydro lift, limited slip diff, and featured the 'new' Bendix drive starter.

My dad sold Wheel Horse late 50's into the 60's. I remember my brother and I talking, saying they were $100 per HP, don't know if that's accurate.
