Default Ariens Rear Tine Tiller model 901018

Had a tension spring break the loop at one end under the belt cover guard and sprang out of position in the process. Believe its to tension the reverse idler pulley. I found a spring that should be close enough to work but be damned if I can figure out where it's supposed to go. Even with a parts manual and service manual there is no mention of how to hook up this spring. The spring is approx. 7/16" dia. x 3" long including the loops at each end.

Wondering if someone has a similar machine (1988 vintage) and can take a picture and post it here showing location of the springs under the belt cover guard.

Thanks for any assistance in this regard.

Bill

Well if somebody modified the drive line, it was the Ariens dealer that I purchased it from new. The second spring is for the reverse belt so that you have to hold the lever against spring tension to keep it in reverse. If you let go of the lever it automatically pulls the tension pulley away to slack off the belt for safety reasons. My parts book shows both springs but doesn't indicate where the smaller spring is supposed to go and there's no obvious wear points where the spring was originally.

I'm waiting to hear back from an Ariens dealer in Saskatoon that I located from an internet search (not the original dealer).

Bill, my vintage Ariens uses a coil spring around the forward idler bellcrank. This retracts the idler to neutral in hands off position. The extension spring that you describe is connected between the operatorís control rod and the forward idler bellcrank. It limit the amount of pull against the belt & idler. The reverse bellcrank idler is actuated by a mechanical rod link between reverse and forward bellcranks. These are the only two springs in the ďdead manís clutchĒ system. Hope this helps.

Well no luck with the Ariens dealer in Saskatoon. Their parts diagram isn't any better than mine! Going to have to phone a mechanic on Monday and see if anyone there has worked on this model and remembers where this spring is supposed to go. If that doesn't work will make my own spring mounting points by drilling a couple of holes to hook the spring to and hope it works.

Mystery regarding placement of the broken tension spring now solved! At first I thought it was to pull back the reverse tensioner pulley so was looking on the wrong side of the machine. Then on further thought decided it was to keep the forward drive belt tensioner pulley away from the drive belts so machine wouldn't creep in the neutral position. Found a hole on the frame on left hand side of machine to hook one end of the spring to, and other end goes over the bolt through the center of the tensioner pulley.

If anyone wants to see a picture, I'll have to go to another computer as can't seem to upload them from my MacBook Pro.

I take it the tines are NLA from an Ariens dealer?

There's a number of new tines listed on eBay by seller "Theroshop". I didn't see any listed for your model but maybe they would fit anyway? The pictures shown in the listings appear to be identical for all models listed.
