Default Odd barn find Maytag runs again...Maytag prototype or farmer fix?

Well, it has taken a lot of cleaning to make the carby work again (and sandblasting to clean things up...), and make the engine run. But it runs really well, and starts easy.

any thoughts?

I'm no Maytag expert, but I'd say that is someones own configuration. Looks like a good job. I do wonder how they did the check valve, (not the fuel check valve, but the intake check valve).

The carb is a motor scooter carb I belive, very nice and not common. This is not a farmer rigged carb set up, actually factory to the scooters. I think

It looks like one of those rare Briggs/Maytag collaborations.Whoever did it did a nice job.

That mixer looks just like the one on a B&S model WMI that I used to have that came off a mower. I think it is a well done aftermarket modification. It took a machinist to do the mods, not a farmer or blacksmith.

Default Re: Odd barn find maytag runs again...Maytag prototype or farmer fix? THE ANSWER...

Ok...here it is, I bought the Maytag with out a carb a while back, and adapted a Briggs vac-u-jet to it using aluminum plate (You can find the pictures in this thread... http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35213 )

The engine ran very well, but it was not a particularly attractive piece.

I made a pattern out of wood and I cast the new carburetor mount that you now see on the engine in aluminum. I have had the mount waiting for about half of a year now, waiting for the right carburetor. Well, at the woodland swap I found it... The carb came off a WI Briggs engine. This was not a machine shop project, it was made using a few files and an old hand crank drill at home.

The check valve is a piece of coke can as a reed

it could have very well been a farmers fix, or a machinists project...and, if Briggs and Maytag had ever worked together, it may really have been The very rare "Maybriggs Engine"

I hope you all enjoy my little project- I know I did

The pickup is an old brass pickup of a BS 5 hp engine (13000 series) cut down about an inch and a half.

Does any one have a pic of the scooter carb? I would like to see it

Starting, right... it is a little odd, I have a kicker for the engine but it is busted up real good (I think the engine was dropped once and the kicker, lever and cover took all the damage) Tried welding it (Had very good luck with mig on iron before) Spider cracks all through it. well, it was busted when I got it so nothing lost.

I stand on the skid, and put a foot on the flywheel and spin it over a couple times until it fires. Sooner or later, I will find the right starter

Very good job, I like people with a little mechanical creativity. You should be very proud, you did what it took to make your engine run without original parts. This is what many people had to do back in the depression era. AWSOME!!!!!
