Photo Vintage Cars at Freeport Illinois show

Thought I'd post a few pictures from last years show, as we're planning on quite a showing of vintage cars & trucks again this year at the Stephenson County Antique Engine Clubs 42nd Annual Threshing Show in Freeport Illinois. August 5th 6th & 7th

Located on the Stephenson County Fairgrounds at the corners of Walnut & Fairgound roads just South of Freeport.

Show Feature this year is CASE Tractors & Equipment. Already have a 40 HP & 65 HP steam traction engine there along with the clubs Case road roller (gas powered).

Feature gas engine this year is International Harvester.

Also have the Heisler Logging Locomtive offering steam train rides from the depot a mile south of the fairgrounds & the huge Cooper Corliss stationary steam engine behind the museum accross the road from the train.

Here's a few more from last years show.

The Rawleigh salesmans truck, Joe Maurer's Chevy touring car from the first group of pictures, and a few others were already in the building yesterday.

i worked on the 27 henney today. it has stephenson fenders on it. henney bought out all of the stock when stephenson went out of business. henney manufacturing was also in freeport. they started out in the 1800's building buggies. they built the first limousine for the white house, the first bulletproof limo, and mainly was in the ambulance and hearse business. the 1927 hearse i am working on was a ambulance/hearse combination car. it had a snap in gurney and jump seats in the rear compartment that were removable and then a casket roller cart and flower rack would slide in if you didn't survive your trip to the hospital. there is a henney museum somewhere in freeport. has anyone been to it. the museum in marietta ohio took the henney there a few years back for a open house they had. i didn't go to it. the museum in marietta took 5 hearses to the show at the packard museum in warren ohio 2 weeks ago.

Photo Re: Vintage Cars at Freeport Illinois show

Here's a few pics I shot today of some of what's here for this year, with more coming in yet.

1st one is a pair of Stephens cars owned by Dick Farnsworth, these were built in Freeport in what later became the Burgess Battery plant. He and his wife also have a pair of early model Chevy's that they drive around town on a regular basis and take to most of the local car shows.

2nd & 3rd pictures are Joe Maurers lastest purchase, being an old Dodge screen side truck that he bought at Troy Rudy's auction last weekend.

4th one is an early Chevy chassis.

Dick told me we are supposed to have a pair of 1908 Fords and 6 other cars coming that have never been here before.

Rod:

Any pictures of that 27 Henney-Stephens ?

I forgot about that pairing. 32 years ago I had a big manilla envelope stuffed almost 2 inches thick with factory photos and blueprints, sales brochures, a couple receipt books, and all kinds of advertizing for Henney, but like a fool I sold it all for the same $25.00 I paid for it at a garage sale. Some of the photos may have been of Henney-Stephens, and there were some of Henney-Oldsmobiles and a few other brands. I kept a few pieces out of it when I sold it, but that's another one of those things I've been kicking myself for many many years for getting rid of.

Eventually Henney contracted with Packard and based all of their work on the Packard chassis which meant that when Packard went out of business that was pretty much the end of Henney too.

They also built a few one off custom cars for the auto shows that would make George Barris envious, and built a radio car & a mobile camera car for one of the movie studios.

The 2nd picture in my 2nd post is an early Henney that was converted into a farm truck. I don't remember if that one is based on a Buick or some other brand, but it has all the Henney emblems on it.

4th picture in the second post is 3 of the clubs Henneys. I may be off on the years, but I think they are... 1953 Henney (Packard) Ambulance, 38 or 39 Henney (Packard) Hearse, and 1954 Henney (Packard) Flower Car.

There is NO Henney Museum in Freeport , but the Henney Factory is still standing with Honeywell (formerly Micro-switch which was originally started by C.F. Burgess of Burgess Battery which occupied the building that the Stephens cars were built in) using it as one of their factories. There was a sort of "Henney Family picnic" reunion/reenactment held at the Stephenson County Historical Museum a year or two ago, which our club took the three Henneys to along with having a few other items on display there, but the closest thing to a Henney Museum would be the antique engine clubs museum accross from the railroad which has a room dedicated to Henney items along with the Hearse, Ambulance, & Flower Car.

I'd really love to see that 27 you're working on... Actually I love to see it permanently back in Freeport with it being made from BOTH Freeport Manufactures.

Didn't get up to the building to see what other cars showed up today, or actually yesterday as it is now almost 1:00 A.M. & I'm still on the 'puter.

But I got my truck in there parked down by the sawmill.

I'll try to get more pictures to post tomorrow (actually today), but for now, my truck is all I have to post.....

Photo Re: Vintage Cars at Freeport Illinois show

Here's some of the 'new ones' for this year.

Camera battery went dead while I was uploading them so I will try again in the morning before I head back in to the show.

1st one is an early Chrysler, I think they said 1927, that was in the movie "The Sting" with Robert Redford.

2nd one is a "Center Door" Model T Ford.

3rd one is a 1907 Ford parked next to the 1908 Ford that was here last year. (I passed on the miss-information that it was another 1908 in the 5th post)

4th one is just a 'filler picture' until I get more of them uploaded into the computer. Had to take in my Eastwood Tool Company 37 Ford bank with my little Massey Harris Type 1 and park it next to my real ones.

Also met oldproff today as he came up from Mississippi to pick up his newly aquired Massey engine, and brought an interesting Maytag with him that I will post a shot of in one of my other threads about the show.

Batteries are still charging, so I'm using a couple more old pictures.

The Indian Motorcycle is back again, and the 27 Ford race car is here again too, even though the picture I have of it is from another local car show.

Time to revive another thread from last year....

Hopefully some or most of these vehicles will be back again this year, PLUS we are co-hosting the Henney Homecoming Reuinion this year at the show as noted in another thread I have dedicated to that part of the show.

Along with many of the previously shown cars, I'm guessing Joe Maurer will have his new Model T Ford there Plus with the Henney Homecoming, Rod Fielder will be bringing the 27 Henney shown in post #7 that was featured in the Movie "Get Low" with Bill Murray, Rovert Duvall, and Sissy Spacek.

Show dates this year are August 3rd, 4th, & 5th 2012. Please see the clubs website at www.thefreeportshow.com for more information.

Not sure how I missed this thread but it is a Freeport Show thread and I don't typically associate with them anyhow.

Anywho. In post 5 you said that the two Stephens cars are owned by Dick Farnsworth. In reality he has 4 Stephens but only one in the picture is his. The other is owned by me Uncle. Its not looking good for My UNcle getting his car to the show right now. He hurt his back several weeks ago and simpy can't get to the car to prepare it.

I will be bringing a table full of Henney paperwork in. Some being originals from the collection of Nuell Steinmetz(sp) who was the General Sales Manager there.

Also, Henney used the remnant components of the Stephens car. Mainly Fenders and possibly some frames is what I understand. Other than that there was no other association between the two cars. In 1931 models the fenders were made in Chicago by the same company who produced the fenders for the Duesenbergs. The are basically the same fenders. That being said Henney had no Henney-Stephens cars like there are no Henney-Duesenberg cars.

According to some of the paperwork I have...Nuell stated that one Rolls-Royce chassis was sent to Freeport for a Henney body to be put on.

See you at the show.

Sorry about the error in post #5, and VERY Sorry to hear about your Uncles back problems. Hope he makes a quick recovery.

I USED To Have a large envelope packed to the gills with original Henney literature, brochures, sales receipt books, factory photographs, blueprints & wiring schematics, etc., but like a fool, I solf it all 33 years ago. Been kicking myself ever since.

A Rolls Royce Henney WOW! THAT would be something to see.

I'm no good with names and faces, but I know we've talked a few times on here the last couple years, so if you get a chance, stop down at the sawmill when I'm sharpening the blade and have time to talk and we can visit a while.

In the mean time, you may want to try contacting Farnsworth, and see if there's anything he can do to help get your Uncles Stephens there.(& Sorry again for the mixup in post #5)

Thanks for clearing that up. I was hoping to meet up you, but, maybe some other time.

What other Henney's is the Museum bringing ?

Any pictures to share to wet our appetites with ? (either in this thread or in the one I started On the Henney Homecoming)

It will be interesting to see what kind of paperwork ihredo4 brings too. I remember you saying before that the 27 was built with some Stephens parts, but Dick Farnsworth seemed unaware of any connection between the two.... At least the last time I talked with him about it, but that's been a while.

All of the paperwork I had years ago is long gone, but if I do some digging to find them, I did snap a bunch of polaroids of it all. Henney also had a "Used Car Lot" in Freeport where they resold the cars they took in on trade for the Hearses and Ambulances. I had a two page ad of cars they had for sale, along with all the other stuff. I NEVER should have let that stuff go, but I did.

Looking through my most recent posts, I just now realized that I read THAT wrong, and thought you (or the museum you work for) were Bringing More Henney's to Freeport.

Too late to be able to edit my last post with the line "What other Henney's is the Museum bringing ?", so I am posting here about having misread your last post. The museum owner Did bring pictures of the "other Henney's" in the collection though, and the 27 was a work of art.

Beautiful Job on the restoration.

Figured I'd revive this thread again instead of starting ANOTHER new one.

Show dates this year are August 2nd, 3rd, & 4th 2013.

Many of the same cars already shown are already or will be back again this year, along with a few different ones, some that I've never seen before.

As of yesterday (Tuesday), there are a handfull of them in the building already including this nice little Hupmobile (right hand drive), and a beautifully restored sleigh. And Many More to come yet for inside & outside displays.

Joe Maurer has his old Ford 'Gypsy Wagon' converted firetruck in there, and I drug my 4hp KG Stover up on the bed of my 37 Ford and took in yesterday. (sure do miss having a loader tractor)
