We got the front axle castings back this week. They are back in 2 pieces now instead of 4. We got the crankshaft at the shop now being turned so we can get started pouring main and cam bearings. We are getting snow tonight also but not as much as my friends to the south and east! Wendell

Very impressive work, glad to see you were able to save those castings. I'm not sure if you have mentioned it before or not, but do you have a place that does professional casting repair as a business that you care to name? If not I understand, just curious. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

Here are some pictures of the patterns We are having made to cast the steel gears for the gear that drives the diff. and the bull pinion gears. There is a lot of work and $ that goes into making patterns for gears. with the pattern we are making there will be 0 draft in the teeth when it is cast. Looking forward to seeing the finished gear! Wendell

This is the way, I understand the Oilpull E master gears were made. I want to get pictures of patterns and molds. You should have a pattern for the wheel with oversized outside diameter allowing space for the tooth inserts. On the E that was an old gear with a thick band over the old teeth.

Wendell - not to be too nosy but how does the cost compare to casting a smooth blank and cutting the teeth? Or is it the size that makes casting the teeth a better option? I think a lot of folks (including me!!) forget that casting gears with teeth is a whole different game. If you did it with conventional pattern draft for getting the pattern out of the sand, you'd end up with teeth that only make contact with the adjacent gears at their thickest point - not good engineering.

This looks like a very clever solution. Thanks for sharing!

My Machinist does my cast iron welding. You can contact me to get anything done. He is like most very talented people not very people friendly!
We got the rear wheel back from the machine shop yesterday. They machined the hub out and pressed a slug into it and just to be safe welded it also. It can't go anywhere as long as the wheel is shimmed against the main frame but they just wanted to be safe. It is hard to find a machine shop to chuck a 7ft wheel! Wendell

There are pros and cons both ways on casting gears vs machining gears. I have machined several sets of Bull pinion gears and cast smaller spur tooth gears as well as had spider gears recast. On machining the bigger gears it seams like they have issues with the tooth profile although they did a better job on the 2nd set of bull pinions I had made. Gears that are out in the open where you see them and have spokes in them look nicer recast. It cost more $ to make a ring around the gears to get a 0 draft but on a big wide gear you would be years wearing it down to get full contact. The supplier is using a process where the pattern sand makes a finer finish where machining the teeth is not needed. With making patterns the more gears you cast the more affordable it becomes. In answer to your question there is no clear cut right way to make a gear. Am hoping other people in Minnie Land will need some gears recast and we can get a quanity order together after the first set is done and I see all is well.We will have bull pinions, Diff drive gear and steering sector gear patterns for a big Minnie tractor when we are done. Wendell

The crankshaft is at the crank shop. We are picking up the cylinders, heads, rods, and pistons tomorrow from the machine shop. My machinist got all the transmission clutch pads, pins and linkages bored bushed and new pins made.I think he counted 68 moving parts in the 2 clutches that make it power shift forward and reverse. The pattern maker told me we are getting close to having the gear patterns done. Will try to get some pictures on here tomorrow. Wendell

Here is the pallet of engine parts we got back today. The pistons, cylinders, wrist pins, heads and connecting rods are all good to go now. Hopefully the crankshaft will be done next week and we can start the Pouring bearing process. Wendell

We got started riveting cleats on the Minnie today. We got a new toy, A air rivet buck and it is a nice thing to have when bucking this many rivets. It has 60 cleats per wheel and 3 rivets per cleat=180 rivets per wheel. In case anybody asks the holes in the wheel does not line up that good with the holes in the cleats. Even with 1/2 rivets and 9/16 holes we have to use a air file and a drill bit a lot. We did 8 cleats today so if we can do 12 tomorrow we will be on track to have them mounted in 6 days.I am trying to keep it fun and just do it in short doses.

Could you (or oilpulled) please elaborate on that a little more.

I understand the 0 draft, and the finer sand for a better finish to save machining, but I'm at a loss as to what the ring around the outside does for it.

I'm hoping I'm not the only one wondering about that and that others will find the answer helpfull as well.

I am not a pattern maker so don't take this to the bank but the way I understand it the take apart outer ring is to core the gear without having to put taper into the teeth to pull it out of the sand. I will be a lot smarter after we get these gears done. Wendell

Thought you were going to use the same system to buck the rivets on the wheel cleats like you did on the Fairbanks?
