Default (Ideal Mower) People Will Scrap Anything

I have Mondays off so I tagged along with my dad to deliver some parts and cruise around. On the way back we swung in the scrap yard looking for a chunk of steel we needed for another project. But low and behold this was sitting there. Well it was one of those moments, leave no man behind mentality kicks in. After some honest scrap yard dealing it was loaded in the back of the truck. Turns over good. Pretty much all there. I already have a larger one and a bunch of new parts. So this was a nice Monday find. Its amazing what people think is scrap. One mans junk is another mans junk and I think all junk is beautiful.

Hey, what a great find. Scrap yards around here won't let you buy anything that has already bin across the scales. And I have a question about oil for almost all old engines, WAS MOBIL the only oil for small engines? All engine tags so stated. Thanks.

Thumbs up Re: (Ideal Mower) People Will Scrap Anything

Macymadness, Mobil was the biggest supplier of oil for a while. There were other brands, but Mobile had connections!

Most of the scrap yards I used to get stuff from have either closed or no longer sell stuff that comes in.

Nice find jt48! What kind of shape is the engine in? Mower salvageable? You don't see the mowers often! Sure looks like it would make a great display!

Mower turns and moves pretty smooth. The wheel ratchets work. The motor is turning and everything is there. Even the air breather. It is a pretty complete project. It needs some love but its not bad at all.

Congrats on the mower find, a great treasure. I do have to ask a question for the more Ideal engine experts. If you look at the magneto side flywheel, the hole in the flywheel is not drilled to hold the governor weight. I've got a lead on another model R that is the same way. How were they governed without the weight present in the flywheel?

That is an awesome find! I’m wondering what the width is on the mower. I have a large one with a 30” cut and I have a smaller one with no mower and always wondered what width it should be. Yours looks like it’s the same size as my smaller one.

Mike, I believe my extra cutting units are 22 and 30 inches. The two big ideals I have both have 30 inch units thou the early one has a f&n unit. My little one I believe is a 22. I have an Ideal with a Briggs b but it has a 25 inch unit. I also have 2 suburban models one with a kick start NR6 one with an h. The h machine is missing the cutter but the NR6 machine has an 21 reel. They also made Briggs a and k mower pushers and my literature says they were 22 and 30 inches. I think all the hit and miss ideals were either 22 or 30, the Briggs mower pushers units were 21, 22, 25, and 30. Briggs powered units with engine powered reels came in 22, 27, 30, and 32 inch sizes.
