Default What Coil and Battery ?

So I got the 3hp Majestic all cleaned up and ready to go, what coil and battery do I need to use on it ?
Can I use the 6 volt coils they sell at Starbolts and a regular 6 volt battery ? Also, what gauge wire is the best to connect them ?

Thanks

You can buy low tension coils from Startbolt or Hit & Miss. You can also a car coil, fluorescent light ballast etc. or wind your own. Here are a couple of examples. http://engines.rustyiron.com/ltcoil/index.html or
http://www.geocities.com/flywheels20...nsioncoil.html

I run mine on twelve volts six volts works fine as well.

10 0r 12 guage single strand wire is best, not multistrand. make sure your contact area is clean and shiny.

Dave, If you have a Handicapped business that sells Power chairs, Check with them and see if they will trade a dead battery for one that they have taken out of a chair. Lots of times the batteries that they take out will check out good and hold a charge. I get 35 AMPH batterys all the time which are Gell Cells [Sealed] that I run my engines on with no problem. My 2cents, Dale

Andrew, why do you think single strand wire is better than multi-strand? Single strand is much more liable to break due to vibration which is why you see the wire coild on old engines in pictures. I have always used multi-strand and never had a problem of any sort.

Dale's suggestion is good for cheap batteries. Another idea is that this is the time of year that places like TSC, Cabela's, Bass Pro, etc. stock gel cell batteries for use in deer feeders and game cameras. Typically you can buy the 6V batteries with either spring or spade tops for not much more than a decent lantern battery. They also sell trickle chargers fairly reasonable to top off the charge after a show. If you're into the whole "green" thing, solar chargers are also available to keep your iron addiction off the grid.

I was just on the verge of asking about this for my Fairbanks headless Z which is missing the magneto. Do you just use the primary side of a regular automotive coil?

Yes, you only use the primary side of the car coil if it is an ignitor setup..
