Gene,

I believe your engine is a later model M. probably a series 2. The first early Petter model M's were called series 1 and the serial numbers started at 1000 and went to 1300 so there were only 300 of them produced and we know there are at least dozen or so that still exist. I do not remember the serial number information about the series 2 engines. I can look in my book tonight when I get home and let you know.

Gene,

The information below is from the stationary Engine Magazine written by David Edgington and published by Kelsey publishing LTD (UK) in 1997. I do not know of anymore information that is available at this time or if you can still purchase back issues.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

1-1/2 - 2hp "M" type (VZ) introduced in 1922 at engine number 1000. First batch of engines had front mounted magneto which was soon phased out in favor of conventional side fitted unit, possibly at engine number 1329. Engines produced between 1923 - 1931 (1330 - 9372) were of the plain bearing type. Engines produced from 1931 onwards (Known as the 1932 models) have ball and rollar main bearings, number 9373 - 13700. Production ceased in 1939.

Series 1- production 1922 serial #'s (1000 - 1329).

Series 2 - production 1923-1931 serial #'s (1330 - 9372).

Series 3 - production 1932-1939 serial #'s (9372 - 13700).

Do you have any photos of your engine we could see? Below is a few photos of my series 1 Petter engine before and after restoration. You can see more photos at the link below under the heading "Our Engine Collection"
