Default Where do all the crank guards go?

Hi, just a quick question, where do all the cranks guards go?

I have just bought an 1924 Fairbanks Morse Z 3HP, and the crank guard is missing. (I have a wanted ad in the classifieds on this site and I have a possible guard)

I looked around on the net and it appears that many other makes of engines have there guards missing or if they still have them the owner proudly tells you so.

So I guess at one point of the engines life they are removed for some reason. Do they make working on the engine harder to do or they viberate.... or are there any other reasons? I would like to know.

On my Taylor... the clearance is so close that if the guard bolt ever vibrated loose, the guard would tip a little and be hit by the end of the rod/crankshaft.

They were usually the first thing removed when repairs were made and often not put back on and lost.

Like Patrick stated, they were the the first thing to be removed from the engine. Safety wasn't as big a concern years ago, the farmer or operator of the engine had to grease and oil the engine regularily. They would have to take the guard off to do this, and I suppose most people just figured it would save time to leave it off, so they could do this job quicker the next time. Many of the engines have the original magnetos and ignitors missing as well, and they were converted to a buzz coil/sparkplug. The first time they gave trouble the magneto was thrown in the garbage, and they put on there dependable model T buzz coil, that they could pick up at any garage. I always wish I knew where they threw these parts. Wayne

On the new cars if they have metal fenders, scrape a little paint off, oh on the neighbors car and you will find crank guards of all makes. They were melted down.

The guard to my 6hp FM is stuck in the rafters of my garage. It was in the way, so I took it off. Many engines never had one.

I bought a 3hp Crankguard from Ken Meeks once for a friends engine it cost $100. They are still around but the bigger they are the more pricey they get. Especially since these are tin and not cast like other engines, where you can drop off a pattern to cattail.

They are out there just keep looking !
