Default 14 hp Briggs motor won't run... Help me.

I just wondered if anybody could help me figure out why I can't get my 14 hp Briggs and Stratton I/C motor to run.
I bought it used and complete but not running. After trying to get it to run for a while, I pulled the bottom off and noticed the timing marks weren't even close to lining up, so I set those, then adjusted the valves to .003 intake and .005 exhaust.
It doesn't have much compression (only 35lbs. ??) so I squirted oil in the cylinder and no improvement was made, and I tried to do a leak down test but wasn't sure how. I here air seeping out the carb a tiny bit so I removed the head and reground the valves. The motor will start to run a tiny bit but won't stay running. I have disassembled the carb twice searching for something I may have missed but still can't get the motor to rev up enough to stay running.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. I feel like I tried everything.

The OHV model Briggs engines have a de-compression release on the intake lobe of the cam. They will not have show much cranking compression with a compression tester unless you turn the engine BACKWARDS.

Check and make sure the coil is mounted the right side up on engine. It should be marked as to which side goes up or down. Also check flywheel key. It may be sheered a little. With solid state coil you will have spark with sheered key or coil on upside down and either will throw timing out. Bill

thanks for the thoughts. I will check coil and keyway to see.

I also didn't know about the compression release feature.
Thanks, Rob

On these engines, if the intake clearance is to wide dis-ableing the de-compressoin release, the starter can not crank the engine. I have had many people replace a good battery when their lawn mower would not crank. Then they bring the mower to me and all that was needed was the valve clearance adjusted. You set your valve clearance to what I do.

Thanks for the help.
It was a sheered keyway. The flywheel was off about 1 inch.
Now it starts and runs like a champ.

If Only I could get it to idle a little slower...
but that's not as big a deal as it not running at all.

Thanks a ton
Rob

The idle speed on most Briggs engine is in the 1750 RPM range.
