Default 1947 John Deere D Magneto Timing

I am trying to time a 1947 John Deere D with Edison magneto. Impulse fires on 6:30 and 11:30 positions on flywheel instead of 3:00. Engine is timed correctly. Can anyone advise how to adjust the magneto?

When you were getting the engine timed to put the mag on having LH cylinder, #1 on flywheel up on TDC compression were the drive slots in the governor horizontal ? If not the governor has to be lifted and set right so those are horizontal. The impulse on the Edison CD 2 is not adjustable and should be fixed at 35 degrees. However if someone has been in it and didn't time the dist rotor correct it will be off. There is a slot or hole should be able to see a L come up and line up with punch or line mark on the other gear inside the mag. It's a CCW or LH left hand drive mag facing the drive so use the L mark not the R mark for RH. The Edison Splitdorf CD 2 mags have to be timed to the engine correctly because they fire on compression stroke only so can't reverse the wires if get it 180 deg off like with a Wico or FM J or X mag that fires on compression and exhaust.

You can take the impulse lug off the governor without taking the governor loose from the engine.Just turn it where you need it and put it back on. If i was home i would scan the procedure out of the book. If you can wait till next weekend ill do it. Good Luck, Jeremy

1937 to 1953 D has different governor and uses flange mount magnetos. The lug driving the mag is keyed to the governor shaft not adjustable like on the earlier 1924 to 36 D or whenever they changed.

Check and make sure your flywheel is in time with the crankshaft !!
