Default "Mystery" spring in Wico C

Can anyone tell me what the little coil spring, behind the disk that is behind the impulse mechanism is for. (terrible sentence, I know) It is in a little well and from the looks of the disk, at one time, there was something contacting the dick, maybe a brush pushed bu the spring? The spring has a loop in the end so I'm not sure what it was supposed to do or if it's necessary. There is nothing there but the spring now and I'm wondering what to do with it.

Thanks in advance,

Steve
