Cool 16hp Briggs runs rich only on gasoline, not propane.

Hi, new memeber here. I have a 16 hp Briggs Vanguard Winco 9k Generator that ran just fine on propane. I bought a 1971 Onan 4k propane unit and will be selling the briggs/winco unit. I thought it would be good to have it run on gas also as a better selling point. So I took off the propane line and started it on gasoline. Problem is it runs rich with the air cleaner on. It runs 95% smooth with the lid off. Of Course the air cleaner is clean. I took the top of the carb off to look at the float, everything seems o.k? Can't understand why it runs smooth on propane but rich on gasoline. Any ideas? I set the plugs at 25 and 30 and had no change.
Thanks.

I ordered an air filter on eBay. I have no past history of this unit and who knows whats on the air cleaner element? When the engine is at 3600 rpm and I try to remove the air cleaner and tin it actuall is a hard pull. I can feel the suction and that ain't right. I'm pretty sure that's my issue.
Thanks anyway and great talking to you.

You may find that the carb jets were drilled for propane, as well. If the carb is not set up as a duel fuel unti, it won't run properly on gas.

I just got my new filter fron ebay with the foam outta filter. Fired the gen up and placed it on and there was no change in the rpm's. She ran great. So my old filter looked fine, light shined through the paper etc, but some how she was clogged.
