Default Van Norman No. 2 Duplex Milling Machine

Hi,

Is there anyone out there who can tell me anything about a Van Norman No. 2 Duplex milling machine? I've got a lead on a disassembled one that would make a nice winter restoration project. But I don't know if it's worth having, even at a dirt-cheap price. I found quite a bit on the Internet about other models such as the No. 12, but nothing on the No. 2. I'm guessing the No. 2 is a bit smaller than a 12? I don't want a full-size machine anyway, so that would be fine.

If anyone has an instruction manual or parts book I'd gladly pay whatever it costs to scan or photocopy it and send it to me, if you're willing to do so.
I'm not sure if the machine I'm looking at is complete, so a parts diagram would be very handy.

Thanks for your help!
Ian

I believe that the No. 2 and No. 12 are the same size machine. The 2 is an earlier version of the 12. Number 1's changed to 11, 2's went to 12's and so on. I had a 2 at one time and sold it, it is a good machine. It probably has a number 10 Brown and Sharpe taper in the spindle.

Thanks Bill! I was under the impression that the 2 was a bit smaller than the 12. The picture in the ad shows that it's up on blocks and it still doesn't look too big. But maybe I'm wrong...

Can you give me a rough idea of the weight of the machine? My trailer will take about 1600lbs, but if it's much more I'd have to rent a bigger one.

Since you say you had a No. 2 at one time, do you have any pictures of it you could post or send me? They might help in determining if it's all there.

The more I think about it, the more I think I may pass on this one. It's been up for sale very cheap for a month now, and the fact that it hasn't sold tells me it may not be worth having, even as a restoration project.
But I'll do whatever research I can before I decide...

They are not very big. I never used mine. I just saved it from the scrap and sold it off. I don't think it would be much more than 1600 pounds.
I think they are good machines and are very versatile, I would take one over a Bridgeport.

Thanks for your help and the pics, Bill. At least I've definitely confirmed that the machine is a No. 2. (I wasn't even 100% sure about that. The owner doesn't know...) Now to decide if it's worth a long drive and a lot of hassle to save it...
