Default 10 hp Fairbanks/AB33 mag timing

I just had a mag rebuilt and a new trip arm installed for my 10 FM Z engine. Couldn't get it to fire up....would get a couple shots and then nothing. Good spark and even better compression. I had an engine friend help me belt it up and found that the timing was very much retarded. It labored to run. No wonder it wouldn't start. Timing marks on gear and crank are correct. How many degree's after top dead center for starting? I'll need to shim up the mag a little at a time to get it right. Or are there any better ideas?????

Exclamation Re: 10 hp Fairbanks/AB33 mag timing

On retard, the engine should fire at or neat TDC, not after. Advanced, should fire around 20 degrees BTC.

Thanks Andrew,

I will get it timed that way. Should make it start alot better. I've got a FM book on the way and that will help too.
