Default Champion RE-7 Compressor Pump Rebuild

Hi guys..

I have a 1944 Champion RE-7 two stage air compressor that was running, but in bad condition. I have started dismantling it.

I have removed the manifolds and valves, but a lot of grime has got in through the low pressure intake valve and has coated the LP piston. Also some water welled in the LP piston chamber too.

It's been like this a few days and I'm concerned about rust etc.. do I need to get the pistons out as soon as possible? The piston heads are domed and the cylinder head is a single casting.. the pistons have to come out through the bottom. Should I do this by lifting the head off first, or should I try to detach the piston rods from the crank first?

Are the piston rings going to have a problem clearing the bottom of the cylinder bore? Is the gunge that has presumably worked its way down the side of hte piston wall likely to mean the rings will have to be replaced?

Any advise most welcome.. thanks. Will try nad get some photos up soon.
