Lyle Cummins wrote a very interesting book about submarine diesels which covered the birth through 1945 and is effectively a history of the development of the modern diesel - seems all sorts of companies got in on it...

Even Anheuser Busch got in on it

Things kinda took off after the mid 1920's and the introduction of solid injection to replace the air blast stuff...

A full history thread would be interesting
