Default KGB takes over National Threshers June 27-30, 2013

A month from today, NTA will be in full swing! We will have completed the "trial run" day on Wednesday and be ready to hit it hard on Thursday morning.

I spoke with one of the "leaders" of the "KGB" aka Keck Gonnerman Brotherhood tonight, and he assures me that they will be attending in full force complete with engines, tractors, 1/2 scales and more.

If Keck Gonnermans are not your preference, there should be around 60 full and scale engines for you to enjoy plus tractors, gas engines, steam boat, models and more! They will be put through their paces on the sawmills, veneer mill, shingle mill, Baker fans, power eater, threshers, plows (8 & 10 bottoms), weight transfer sled, double incline and more! Never a dull moment.

If you enjoy fiddles, come Friday night to enjoy the student group "Fiddlers Restrung" and stick around for the Fiddler's Contest.

Don't miss the phenomenal spark shows on Fri & Sat nights.

Hope to see you there....I will be!

Beth

Just so CB knows that we really do have more than traction & portable steam engines, here is the steam boat that should make its appearance again in 2013. It will be displayed in the Model building. Fred Binns built it.

The pictures are from when I used it for a parade. Notice how "Nessie" smokes. Fred plumbed up some steam for effect.

I don't have a favorite brand, but some of the best stack music I've ever heard was from a Keck, aptly named "Beautiful Noise," and somewhere on YouTube there's a video of a Keck double climbing a hill that just sounds awesome to me. I'm Looking forward to the spark shows!

It was inspection day yesterday so I was up at the Days Gone By Museum and got a picture of this 19hp Keck. If all goes well in 30 days or so it will be steaming around the grounds at Wauseon.

We are apparently having techinical difficulties uploading a picture. Please stand by....

"Technical Difficulties" remedied by the "Master Moderator" Craig!

The real question is how long that pretty, clean engine will remain "pretty & clean" with the Wauseon dirt!

HalfKeck,

Is this the engine that you own and have been working on?

No, this is one that is owned by the same person who owns the museum. It is a 19hp Keck single side mount. It was in pretty nice shape when he bought it and they have restored it to better than new condition. I have told the owner a few times I might just drive it out the gates and start heading for home, it runs so nice.

In addition to the Kecks, how many Road Locos will we have to enjoy? My brother has been working on his, but it is not even close to coming off of the farm.

I'm ready to play! ...but first, the grates need to go back in the Port, it has to come out of the shop and get cleaned up, the Model A needs a battery and a tire changed.....

Road Loco 726 is currently in the back shop undergoing similar repairs as the PC&O on the valve gear. There is more to it than one might think We are set to be finished and at NTA. Any other road loco's this year?

Does that mean we can hook an additional people mover behind 726?

Your Road Loco really is the BEST to haul people. Your family does an outstanding job as "host" of the ride and 726 sounds so good! We receive multiple compliments every year. I've noticed how people folk to your people mover and allow the tractor pulled movers go partially full.

..now, about those sparkshow hot laps.....

See you in 2 weeks!!

If Keck Gonnermans are not your speed, this HAS to be a hands down favorite! The Kramers do a phenomenal job with it!

17 minutes of even more fun!!

It is a long clip, but the beautiful "music" is well worth the background!! I think my brother needs to hear this again so he makes some decisions on his Road Loco!

Here's one of the Kecks from MI that will reportedly grace NTA with its appearance......those Keck's from TN might have a Southern drawl................ ...think they will get along with the Keck from DE in the second picture?

Toto,

I don't think we are in Kansas any more!

And so begins the parade of "out of state" engines!

I'd better get mine out too!

Very cool, but ...

How is this legal for the road?

(Ok they had more steam lorries and road traction engines in the UK and so they have some legal precedence there)

But in the US?

And don't tell me it's just the orange reflective triangle sign.

I asked my local cops when I was going to convert an adult tricycle from a Ford plant into an electric powered tricycle and they said if I put an orange reflective triangle sign on it they would pull me over....
(I'm in semi rural area on the edge of rural)

Fair enough.

But then how come a traction engine with metal treads can't do the same in the US?

CB,

I think I am missing something here. You can drive your steam tractor down the road without rubber if it is not an asphalt road. Those cast wheels make a mess on asphalt. Unsprung cast wheels will rattle the operator and the machine.

If you research more about the UK, you'll learn that they required the hard rubber on the roading engines and steam wagons.

We'll be looking for you.

Based on your reply I guess I'm asking what's the legal restriction for say running a traction engine in the US on asphalt? - Would a cop pull you over and say, you're damaging the road, here's a ticket or we're arresting you?
