Not that im advocating one way or the other, (as I definitely wouldnt argue with John), but if you dont put the fuel to it until you stop admitting compressed air, i dont see how you could overpressure the cylinder.

Thanks Ray, let me know when you PERFECT the design - I need one for the same multiple engine use that you describe. Bill

[QUOTE=Ray Ethridge;968296]Thanks Bill. The exhaust pipe came from one of the earlier caretakers of this engine.
I hesitated to show the details of this starter because it is DANGEROUS.

I took a few pictures inside the bore after I opened it up. The cylinder is probably the best looking cylinder I have ever seen in an oilfield engine. The first picture is the cylinder bore. The second shows the exhaust ports for the ported exhaust. The exhaust ports are at about the 10 oclock position, I had the camera tilted to see the best view of the ports. The next picture shows the valve as viewed from the cylinder. It is open. And the last picture shows the area where the head gasket was leaking. There is a slight problem with the casting of the head, but I think the real problem was the gasket itself. It appeared to have been broken and a piece missing in the area of the leak. Maybe someone tried to reuse the head gasket and did not notice that it was broken?

A new gasket was cut and fitted on the engine. The engine runs MUCH better now. I did find out that the check valve will have to be serviced very frequently. The engine ran fine the first day, but when I tried to start it the second day the check did not seem to be working. I opened it up and found that the soot from the day before had caused the valve to hang. After thorough cleaning the engine ran just fine. The hit or miss governor is now working, the reason the engine only hits once or twice then coasts a while is because of the governor. The first picture shows the gasket as cut, and the second picture shows it on the head just prior to putting the head back on. I spray painted the edges of the gasket with black paint so that the greenish color would not show on the engine.

Here is the engine running after the head gasket repair. I am reversing the direction of the engine several times in this video. This is one of the few 4 stroke engines that can do this. This is also a hit or miss engine. The governor is working very well here, that is the reason the engine only fires a time or two and then coasts.

Thanks Steve, it was a fun engine to work on, at least after I got the starter motor built. I whipped me down big time before I got that built though. Today I found that the main bearings and the rod bearing were not really getting oil. I cleaned out the oil passages and it is turning a lot easier now. Before I could just barely move it by hand.

Ray, That is a great running engine. Thanks for the video. My S.M. Jones will run either direction if I ever get that basket case put back together. Your Simplex would sure look good at my gas up in April. I think I will feature oil field engines, maybe we could get Shelby to drag one over.

Thanks Dwayne. I would love to have it at your show, but I need to sell some of my engines. I have 10 of the big ones and they have just been sitting there for several years. I am going to put several up for sale to try to get them to people that could use them more. It hurts, but it also hurts to see them just sitting there waiting for my attention. I will definitely have some kind of oilfield engine at your place in April. If I still have this one I will bring it for sure though! Shelby definitely has some great ones to show. There are a few others around down here that would make for a really interesting show.

Now I know where to get head gaskets made. That one looks great.
What kind of gasket material is that and how thick? Garlock?
See ya later
