Default Cockshutt 40 push rods.

Last Sunday we put a Cockshutt 40 with newly rebuilt engine from top to bottom on the dyno.It started missing on #2 right away. After trouble shooting we found a bent push rod and broken rocker. Clearence was set to 12 thou cold. After putting other push rods in and setting it to 14 thou cold and dynoing it for a couple hrs we pulled of the cover to reset the tappets and found a couple push rods bent a bit. The rods aren't new but the valve springs are new.I thought maybe the springs are to strong, and the push rods just too weak.. There was bent push rods in 3 other old engines my brother pulled apart. Any one else experience this sorts thing on these old Budas.

That's a very odd problem. What were the open spring pressures on the old vs new springs? Does it have new valves? Usually when I hear those symptoms I suspect the replacement springs are thicker wire and are experiencing coil bind at max valve lift or the retainers were replaced and they have a taller neck inside and hit the valve guide. I suppose the valve guides could be too tall as well; they make guide cutters for just such a purpose.

I'm not sure about the spring thickness. I would think that the steel in the new springs would be much better then to originals. You give some very good suggestions and I will see what he has came up with if anything yet.

Glad I could offer some suggestions. Hope they help. It's pretty easy to see bind when rolling the motor over by hand. Good luck with it!
