Default Witte B Hit and Miss Engine

I just bought this engine yesterday evening over at the Baraboo Swap. Did Witte make a hit and miss version of the "B", or did someone do a real nice conversion? I can't seem to find any evidence on the interweb. Serial number should put it at early 1926.

Here's some closeups of the governor, and a better tag shot.

Fuller Johnson has a governor like that. Can you post a carb/mixer picture? Pretty cool though.

I'll go shoot the mixer in a few minutes Tim.

In the mean time, I just found evidence of another 1926 1 1/2hp hit and miss version...

Here's a pic of the mixer on ours.

Wow, I found another Witte B 1926 with a hit and miss governor, I guess they made a few, although I haven't found them mentioned in any advertising or manual...

Since we know they must have made a few, but it's not mentioned in any manual or advertising I have found, I wonder if this was a special engine made for a certain machine manufacturer that needed a hit and miss engine. Does anyone know of any large quantity users of Witte engines that may have needed the H&M version?

Here's a video of it running about an hour and a half after it came out of the toy hauler yesterday. I oiled up all the moving parts, and the Wico was throwing blue sparks, and it fired on brake cleaner. Most of the time was spent trying to free up the check valve. It needs a little more TLC, but so far so good.

I've been messing with the Witte for a few more hours today. I had to drill out the top side of the check valve fitting to get it apart, and found about a third of the ball was eaten away. I fitted a new steel ball, and now it's working as it's supposed to. I also adjusted the cam gear timing as it was opening the valve late. After resetting the timing, I ground new bevels on the latch arm and block, as it was slipping off and unlatching early once in a while. Now it's running about as good as I could hope for.

Now, to find some old lumber to make a cart that it looks like it belongs under it, and hopefully it will be on display at the first show of the season in a few weeks.

That mechanism on the back, latching out resembles what's on my "MECO" which is a hit and miss. MECO'S were made by Witte.

Thanks for the info Pat. I'll look into "MECO" for more info.

Found an old nearly 2 x 4 from an old house the other day, and some old caster Wheels last weekend, and now we have a cart for moving it. It'll be on display at the Ixonia Vintage Tractor Expo next weekend.
