That thing is way too cool to go to the scrapper. I hope someone here sees the ad and saves the old beast. And I don't even like V8's....

6.25" bore x 6" stroke, x 8 cyl = 1472.62 cubic inches of diesel injection, driving a 170kw generator, means it's got at LEAST 250hp at the flywheel at governed speed. I'm betting this is a 1200rpm unit... if so, that's 1100 foot-pounds of torque...

Somebody save this bugger! (wish I was there... with a STRONG trailer... )

That is just too cool and deserves a full spiff up. And I'm sure I can just saunter into the local store for parts.

It is located in Bozrah, CT between Norwich and Colchester just off Rt 2. We would love it at the Zagray Farm Museum which is 8 miles up the road. It would go great with our big Fairbanks and Atlas Imperial. Problem is we only take donations. Ed B

Never seen a Herc V8 outside a very few mentions in period publications. Yeah, that one deserved to be saved!

That was made for the phone company- usually those are specified with the best of everything.

another mention of the same model, just for reference.

I wonder if it is an overhead camshaft engine?

I was wondering the same thing. That valve cover sure looks like there's a cam hiding in there. If someone has any disassembled views, could you please scan and post a few shots?

The 4-cyl. injection pumps on the end of each head sorta confirm that theory...

We all are intrigued by this lump. There are manuals for it on epay but I'm not going to pop for one. I wonder if these engines were made by another outfit and were re branded under the herc name. It seems so complex compared to the basic and almost crude nature of Hercules engines.

Aside from i's generator use, I couldn't resist plopping it into an open front end rat rod just to see the artwork of it.
Crusin down the road at 80 with that thing turning 700 rpm.

Older Hercules 4 & 6 cylinder diesels had the injectors located at the top of the block. These look to be located there too or can some one enlarge the picture to make sure.

If nobody here is going to buy it, this sounds like the next best option. Have you inquired into getting the owner to donate it? If owner needs cash I'd drop $5 in the collection hat, just need 299 more members to do the same

John, My catalogs 1954-1959 show this engine for Hercules but in my next catalog 1967 it's not there. Model DNXV8TS also called TCD1468 and a marine version, 1468 cu.in.-up to 500 HP turbocharged and weighing in @ 4200-5000 lb. Said to have the turbulence chamber like several others in their lineup but Hercules was talking about the change to direct injection. The turbulence chamber engine had the injector and TC in the block not the head, with injector discharging immediately into the TC where the expanding, ignited mixture discharged into the cylinder/compression space. Different but similar to the Waukesha TC which was in the head.

My book says the engine is DNX V8, 244 HP @1600 rpm. It says it has two camshafts and has mushroom tappets. It may not be overhead cam. It weighs 4200 lbs.

If it isn't an overhead cam, they went to a lot of trouble to hang an injection pump on the end of each head. ..
