Default Detroit 2-53 Oil Capacity

I picked up a 253 genset that ate a valve. Got it all rebuilt and running but I have no idea what the oil capacity is. It looks like the dipstick is broke off and someone took a grinder to it. There are no marks on it. Best I have found is 9 quarts in a 353. Itís got 8 quarts in it now to get it going. Do any of you know? I have a service manual for it but it doesnít say any capacities.

i will look in my service book to make sure . but i think it is 1/2 in, below block rail were oil pan bolts to block at low end of engine. that will be your high mark .detroit came with serval size oil pan and were set at some angle . alot of engine that were shipped to small equip, mfg did not have dipstick marked , boats and some construction equip. were some . that was detroit procedure to mark dipstick.i wiil try to dig out a old manual and make sure

I’ve been seeing that a lot of them did come with different size pans. It’s a genset so it runs 1800 constantly. I’d appreciate it if you found anything in your book.

They did not make a lot of different oil pans for the 2-53. I have seen a stamped steel and a cast iron one. If the engine is level run the engine to warm the oil. Shut it down wait 10 minuets then adjust the oil level to be 1 inch below the pan rail. This will be the full mark on the dipstick. You could also contact a Detroit distributor and give them the model & serial that is stamped on the block and they should be able to give you the part number of the dip stick for that engine. AL

But how would you check to see if the oil is an inch under the rail? This has the cast pan and I don’t see any way to do that short of filling it and dropping the pan which I’m not interested in doing. It’s plenty heavy by itself with no oil.
