Default Witte Inline 4 and 2 Cylinder Diesel Models VMD

I've never seen or heard of these engines (that I remember).

Anyone know more about them?
2 cylinder at 18-20 HP 148.8 ci
4 cylinder at 36-40 HP 297.6 ci

4-1/4 X 5-1/4 Bore and Stroke
1200 RPM

Plain engines were models VMD-279 and VMD-479
Generators were VMD-224 and VMD-424

At 53" tall they looked like some pretty stout little engines. Near 1,800 lb for the 2 cylinder and almost 2,500 lb for the 4 cylinder, or a 4 cylinder generator at 3,500 lb, all without radiator.

See attached sales flier. It came to me with other Witte literature dated late 1940.

Grigg,

Nice looking equipment, but I haven't run across any references to them in any of my books or the web. Perhaps they weren't established very well when WW II came along??? Brochure spells out a quality product. Perhaps not price competitive?

I have found references here and there but this is the most detailed so far. Thanks for posting it up.

They don't show up in the '42 Diesel Engine Catalog nor the '55. I know I have something I scanned on them but I'm danged if I can find it. My ADD-addled mind wants to say it's prewar and not for very long.

Not in the 55,56,57,59 catalog altho there is a series LD vertical single of 4 1/4 x 5 1/4, 9 HP--no twins listed. In 1959 catalog NO LD listed but the opposed twin , Series 100, 18 HP appears. In my next catalog, 1967, Witte did not even advertise. 1973 catalog shows 2 horizontal cyl singles and 2 horizontal opposed twins. Witte not listed in 1985 or 1994. So my guess would be were being developed near the end of Witte as such and were phased out by ??? who bought them. They would have had them competing with the great 2 cyl opposed. I think the engines were considerably later than WW 2. The Bosch pumps could give a clue or possibly some dated advertising, maybe my old Diesel Power and Transportation magazines. And I thought I already had all the questions I could stand.

Just remembered where I saw it. Wendel's Gas Engine book, page 561. Says during the '40s and shows what looks to be an image taken out of that same brochure. I also found in my notes a reference to a 1944 Popular Mechanics clipping.

I have two each "estimating sheet and price list" for these engines as well.
The 2 cylinder ones are dated October 1, 1940
The 4 cylinder pages dated December 1, 1940

I'll get them scanned and uploaded soon.

I have these copies in a folder with other Witte Diesel models.
Not the very best quality'
The only reference to them I've ever seen.
